The value of health and safety: 2012
So Jane, why did IOSH conduct this survey?
Well the IOSH Attitudes and Salary Survey is actually the sixth in the series,
the last one being in 2009 and it’s a really good snapshot of our membership
and their salaries and their opinions on big issues within the profession.
Understandably, members will be interested in trends in pay and what did the survey tell us?
Well, this survey, 2012, showed that between now and the last survey in 2009, there had been a 9% increase in the average salary.
Now although that sounds like the majority of our members had a pay rise, of course we’ve got reflect that against the rising cost of inflation, the cost of living,
everyone’s gas bill seems to have gone up at the moment, so that really is something that they’ll all be feeling.
There’s also polarisation in pay, so we’re seeing some of the lower paid sectors,
such as education, public services, have decreased and at the other end of the scale,
those working maybe overseas, offshore in the oil and gas sectors, their salaries seem to have increased.
Putting pay aside, how are practitioners seen in the workplace? What is their status in the workplace?
Well, as part of the Attitude section of the survey, we asked our members what their companies or their employers thought
of them and it was really positive to see that they felt they are more valued than ever before in the workplace.
So members spoke about the political and economic challenges as maybe those most pressing at the moment.
What do you see as the challenges facing them most in the next 3 years?
Yes, interestingly these were the very top two ones that came out of the issues facing the profession so of course the
economic climate is really re-shaping a lot of the work that we do, and of course the
Deregulations agenda that we’ll see coming out of the government is also something else that faces our profession.
I think moving forward these are going to be the same types of issues that are going to be top of the table for the next two or three years,
indeed until potentially there’s the election in 2015 that may re-shape things but until then those will be the top issues for our members.
So what is your advice to members about the survey? What are you asking them to do?
Well this is a really great survey; it’s full of lots of information, lots of facts and figures. I have my own opinion of the stories behind that data
and this is now an opportunity for our members to have a look at the survey and see what they think is the story behind the message.
