Alan Russell, Presenter: Who is the most reliable person you know? What is it about that person you
most trust?
Katy Davis, Teacher: Their presence. Being there. Knowing that whatever time of day it
might be, they'll always be there for you. They might not live close but you can -- I
shouldn't use the word rely should I? They're there, you can rely on them, they're trustworthy.
They're everything to you. And they'll never hold any grudge against you. For what ever
you need from them.
Joanne Grenfell, Archdeacon of Portsdown: I think I'm really quite reliable in lots of areas.
In fact I think I'm probably a bit too reliable because I sometimes seek to please
people and do all the things that they want me to do. But being reliable generally, I
think it's important because people need to feel that they can trust you and that if you
say you'll do something for them, particularly if they're in need, that you will actually
do it. You won't just fly off to something that seems a bit more interesting.
Alan Russell: God tells us not to lie: Do not bear false witness. And not to want other
people's goods: Do not covet. But can't I want other people's goods just a little?
And surely the odd white lie doesn't hurt?
Robert Berry, former Banker: Well I don't think it is right to lie. I do think there
are ways in which the truth can be conveyed to somebody. Because bluntly throwing a brick
through a window with a piece of information isn't perhaps considerate.
Michele Moody, Theatre Manager: It can be easier sometimes to lie if you're trying to
get out of a difficult situation and you don't want to hurt the other person's feelings.
But I don't think that makes it right.
Nat Young, Artist: No it is wrong to covet. But we are human, whether we like it or not.
And our humanness was given to us by God.
Alan Russell: The psalmist says to God, "O take not the word of truth utterly out of
my mouth for my hope is in your judgement. I will walk at liberty because I study your
commandments." [Psalm 119.43,45]
We are all members of the community of the world, and it's important to know there is
at least one person out there who is there just for you. As in turn you are there for
someone else.
Give me a contented heart and the will to accept who I am. Help all those whose business
is justice and service to be transparent in their dealings. May I help the helpless,
strengthen the weak and be strong in the face of adversity.
