I started teaching a big class and cell biology over in this old building
building which no longer exists a course and
my first midterm
during that midterm exam I came out in the hall and somebody said
Dr. Hooper the president's been shot and later Martin Luther King was shot
and then bobby kennedy was shot and there were
there were people being killed
in the civil rights movement in the south
I have many friends that were students that age
in the anti-war movement and many of them that were simply conscientious
objectors
that went to prison for a year and a half. It sort of
woke you up to the fact that there were 18 year old kids going off to
vietnam
it just ended up seeming like
not a good use of those lives
hence that got me engaged
in the anti-war movement
I became involved in it
helping organize teach-ins, we'd fill Northrop auditorium
Willey Hall so forth
I had the good fortune in a sense of not being
teaching this semester or the quarter which we had the
the the invasion in cambodia and
that causing this strike so I was
at the Union everyday end up going out and giving
giving talks in the community
and one of my roles was to make sure
the strike stayed peaceful
