We started to work on delivering
the Wired City Reconnected
for Manchester Digital Development Agency.
We would describe it very much
around the sort of a dating agency for businesses
who sits and plans out
who should be talking to who and why
you know put on some drink,
we put on some food,
we try and make it nice and relaxed
and we facilitate a sort of like relaxed
introduction service.
When you go to some events
people have got their elevated pitch
they've got other types of pitch strategies
its basically about 'I'm going to tell you
about my business',
whether you want to know or not!
Whereas what we try and do is get rid of
all that sort of heavy sales pitch
and make it a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere
where people can actually talk to each other
is it someone that you can actually work with
is it someone you feel comfortable with
a lot of it is done prior to the event
where we get profiles,
we get peoples descriptions,
we ask them what sort of businesses
they would like to meet,
what are they sort of looking for.
I think networking is like any job
if you prepare you are nine tenths there.
You know get yourself your profile,
look at what you might be looking for
in you know three to six months time,
four days in advance you get all the profiles
of all the companies that are attending
and we say have a look through
you're almost deciding who you want to meet
and who you don't want to meet
so if your a graphic designer
you don't want to meet the other
two graphic designers
I think its building up that sort of
profile and confidence.
I think the beauty with the Wired City Event is
we get people coming to this event from
Yorkshire, East Lancs, Greater Manchester,
north Manchester area coming to Stockport
so its bringing businesses into the Stockport area
but out of the sort of surrounding areas
we have developed a good relationship with Oldham,
and with Tameside.
What I like about it is the sort of buzz
that 9 o'clock we are politely telling people
to go home when its supposed to
finish at 8 o'clock
because people still want to talk
and tonight that will be the perfect example
it is such a good buzz.
