A high pressure system over the western United States today will shift east by Sunday as
a weak storm moves over the region. A stronger storm during the beginning of next week will
change the current weather pattern from the mild and dry conditions to a much cooler and
windy pattern. In addition a chance of rain and snow showers will be seen across much
of the area on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Periods of gusty winds are expected across the area next week on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Gusts over 40 mph are possible across much of the area while the brown areas show possible
downslope conditions which may create wind gusts to between 50 and 70 mph. Drivers should
be alert for strong crosswinds and blowing dust reducing visibility especially near and downwind of
dry lake beds. As the storm moves into the area an increasing
chance of rain and snow will be seen Tuesday night into Wednesday. Snow levels will likely
be lowering to between 2500 and 3000 feet by Wednesday morning. Although the greatest
snow amounts will be over the mountains it is possible that snow may been seen on the
lower valley floors including the Las Vegas Valley during the day on Wednesday. It is
too early for specific amounts however the highest snowfall totals will likely be over
the mountains of southern Nevada and Northwest Arizona where total snow accumulations above
6000 feet may be a foot or more. Impacts due to this expected storm will include
strong crosswinds on the area roadways and rapid lowering of visibilities due to blowing
sand and dust. In addition the possibilities of snow covered or icy roadways over the higher
elevations while slick roadways may be encountered and also over the lower elevations due to rain and light
snow especially on Wednesday.
