We have seen that the community, in cooperation with the Association Perma Vitae, have created
this "edible community" in the town Übelbach and in relation to this, "Hugelculture"
where built next to the elementary school. I really liked the principles behind this,
because it is very natural. A lot of biomass gets used and one does not have to use fertilizers,
and the plants gets to grow as they want. Since I was anyhow thinking of
expanding my own vegetable garden, it seemed like a good opportunity,
and Jonny Peham fortunately offered to do this together with us and now, we are building it!
To start with we removed the turf - made a shallow pit and there we assemble the
biomass, the branches. Also the turf is added - that becomes great topsoil.
We then organize the layers, putting earth between the branches, so that it does not sink together
no freshly cut wood, like Willows, Alders and such, because that would make it drift apart.
We need this kind of tree nails, could someone who has time prepare this...
This one is almost a bit to thin, they can be this long, then cut it angular,
in this form.
Could you try to wiggle a bit?
We now put on the branches, they are well ramified, so that this stabilize the earth,
since it is quite steep. That will be further stabilized with branches and tree nails, so
that it does not erode when it rains.
When we have done this we put in the seeds, followed by a layer of mulch.
Here we take out salad seeds, and throw it in.
Some onions, salad, garden radish, sunflowers, spring garlic and spring onions as well.
This is a winter coat, which also turns into fertilizer and it protects against the rain.
We just hope that there will be no hard winds now...
