my name is durbahn and i would like to give you a short introduction to bildwechsel.
bildwechsel is a hamburg-based artists' initiative
and an umbrella organisation for women, media and culture.
this is 1979.
and that's me in 1979 with a video camera from those days.
that's what the recorders looked like.
or like that.
and this is the first video collection at bildwechsel with about two hundred tapes.
and now we're in 2008.
this is our homepage.
bildwechsel is in hamburg.
we are not really at the harbour,
or in the hafencity ?
though we have developed some very nice ideas for artists homes in the hafencity.
bildwechsel is located in st. georg.
st. georg is right beside hamburg's main railway station.
and the building in which bildwechsel is located is 3 minutes away from the main station.
bildwechsel is a multimedia artists archive
and therefore needs a lot of space and really big rooms.
this is the document archive.
this is the view into the current video collection.
now there are are about 7 thousand videos and films in the archive.
this is the library.
and this is the space in which we run events within bildwechsel.
for example, presentations and screenings
or workshops
or clubs.
but bildwechsel also now exists in other cities.
mobile-bildwechsel includes bildwechsel bases
in other cities and countries, places to go where we have project partners.
the entire organization is a fuzzy one,
by which i mean an organisation with flexible arrangements.
lodypop in basel as a bildwechsel base.
bildwechsel glasgow.
bildwechsel warsaw.
bildwechsel berlin.
the umbrella organisation also hosts the helga broll gallery
as a virtual gallery with real exhibitions so far in basel and in hamburg.
and last but not least, the video museum.
video has now seen many shapes and sizes
and is in constant need of technical maintenance in order to remain accessible
and to keep the stories and the movies accessible.
the video museum is in lübeck.
but again back to hamburg.
"collect, archive, present" is the motto of the archives.
and the archives are the background and starting point for all bildwechsel initiatives.
bildwechsel is always about exploring the potential qualitative moments of women artists.
for example, the women artists links, a website collection of links,
linking 300 home pages and initiatives to each other.
or the bildwechsel garden house scholarship, which makes it possible for artists
to come to hamburg for short-term residencies
and realise their projects there in a garden house.
or the lotsin ? an info-telegram via email,
informing about what's going on.
not to mention the warm-hand-syndicate,
that gives information on scholarships or empty apartments and studios.
and the events that are organised against the background of the archive.
these could be the video presentations that we make in cinemas
or in cooperation with other projects and spaces.
not to forget the archive bus,
whose main job is to collect or transport different things.
but events also take place out of the bus
and when we have the chance we use it as a space to tell about bildwechsel.
in this leaflet "art. maybe move a little closer",
published by the umbrella organisation for contemporary art hamburg,
one can find the artist run spaces and off-sites of hamburg, and a few others.
bildwechsel is also there as the women's artists project among hamburg artists projects.
in the last two years bildwechsel participated with the other projects
in the two "wir sind woanders - we are somewhere else" symposia and related events.
a little bit of internal organisation.
bildwechsel's logo is the tetrahedron.
a very stable form, according to buckminster fuller.
it is important to know that all work at bildwechsel is on a voluntary basis.
that means, agreements between friends
and that participating artists consider it
as part of their artistic work.
to finances.
bildwechsel was founded with private money.
for a time it had state financial support,
regular so-called institutional financial support.
after the loss of this support, we now have a mixed concept
of donations, fees, and project funding, which we have to apply for again and again.
we have constant financial difficulties because of the high basic costs and rent costs.
but we try to choose the difficulties
that we would like to have.
