PIERRE HABIS (Host): Hello, I'm Pierre Habis of Union Bank. Diversity is one of our most
closely-held values. That's why we're proud to honor Local Heroes in celebration of American
Indian Heritage Month. Now, let's meet one of our honorees.
ROSE-MARGARET ORRANTIA: My name is Rose-Margaret Orrantia, I'm Yaqui. The purpose of Tribal
STAR was to develop curriculum and to conduct training for social workers who work with
rural Indian children that are in the foster care system.
We find that with Indian children, when they are placed out of culture their outcomes are
very poor.
In order for Indian children to learn what it is to be a community member, they really
need to grow up in their own community.
Our relationships are everything to us. For the child, the protective factors are that
it's not just their family members who are looking out for them, but it's the whole community.
That's what we all want for our children. We want them to be healthy, safe and well.
