Welcome to the Shuttle Tire activity. I’m Bonnie Murray, your Education Specialist,
and I’m going to connect NASA and racing to give your students real world application of
the STEM topics in your curriculum. Tires, track surfaces, coefficient of friction
are all huge considerations for crew chiefs and team mechanics. Tire pressure specifically,
is a factor used to increase the cars handling ability and fuel efficiency. In this activity you’ll compare
various tires. I have here a cross section of a Shuttle Tire…
(Gear down and Locked … Touchdown) an automobile tire and a bicycle tire.
You’ll need to gather some tire samples of your Own. In the activity you will learn how to compare
Various tires and how to calculate tire pressure as it’s affected by temperature. Visit the link to access
the resource guide with complete directions and a materials list. Check back often for the release of new activities!
