In the late nineteenth century, Cannabis Sativa was hailed as the most prescribed medicinal
herb in America. More commonly known by the names Hemp, Cannabis and Marijuana, the herb
also played an important role in Chinese medicine. Although the legality of its use is still
an issue, some countries and US states have already allowed the consumption of Cannabis
Sativa but only for medicinal purposes.
Controversy with regards to the use of Cannabis Sativa came into light because of the growing
number of people consuming the herb for recreational use. It is known to give out strong hallucinogenic
effects when consumed in higher doses. However, when used in appropriate doses and under the
supervision of a medical doctor, Cannabis Sativa can be useful in the treatment for
chronic pain, glaucoma, cancer, aids, epilepsy, dysentery, blood poisoning and many others.
Doctors often prescribe Cannabis Sativa to cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, since
it helps manage symptoms brought about by the treatment. In addition, consumption of
Cannabis Sativa helps chemotherapy patients to manage nausea and improve their appetite.
To alleviate chronic pain, Hemp is also the herb of choice.
