Hello, my name is Kane Southgate and I am an Engineering Services Technician with Kroll
Ontrack Australia. Today I am going to talk to you a little bit about an experiment that
we've conducted in regards to secure deletion of data.
Most people think that when you delete data from your recycle bin or trash can that files
have been gone permanently. However, this is not the case. Subject to circumstance,
files are very much recoverable. So for our experiment we purchased three second
hand storage devices from an online auction site -an iPhone, a laptop and a server. These
three devices claimed to all been wiped of data.
Once we received these devices we ran them through our standard data recovery process
using Kroll Ontrack's propriety tools and technology.
Of the three devices, the only device that was correctly wiped was the laptop. The iPhone
had files that we could recover in the form of text messages and photos, and the server
had an alarming 55 gigabytes worth of data in over 70,000 files.
Because it is against Kroll Ontrack's privacy policy to view any of the data that has been
recovered, we cannot tell if the data is of a sensitive nature or not.
However our experiment does show that if you are planning a new upgrade to new hardware
you should probably consider the way in which you delete your files.
This is ideal for users who want to re-use or sell their hardware after the wipe. This
software product is available for download from our online web shop and comes available
in different licensing options. The second option is to use an Ontrack Degausser
to wipe the data. This option is best for hardware this is intended to be retired or
disposed of permanently as the Ontrack Degausser uses an electromagnetic field to wipe the
data clean and render it inoperable. Visit our website at www.ontrackdatarecovery.com.au
for more information about our Ontrack Degausser.
