One success that I am very proud of is the African-American male mentoring program
that we established with the YMCA and 20 other black mentors in the community.
I think it is great for our African-American students
especially the males who are struggling with academic achievement
I think to have role models that look like them
or come from the same community they come from, that it would give them inspiration.
That is one of the biggest successes that I am most proud of.
One of the biggest successes I have had is with our Racine Unified community partnership committee.
We established the committee when we tried to expand summer school from more than just a remedial
summer school to something that offered a great deal of enrichment opportunities.
As part of the enrichment opportunities we wanted to invite local agencies that do youth programming within Racine
into the schools to help promote their programs and help better the overall education through summer school.
That committee has lead to the summer activities fair
which is May 14th at festival hall, from 11:00 to 3:00 pm
and that is an even broader reach
Not only the community partners that were invited to be part of summer school
but also any organization that is providing summer activities K through 12 in the greater Racine community
It’s very exciting to see this start off from the root level and have it grow.
The event hasn’t actually happened yet
and we’ve already started getting requests for next year
So, it looks like it’s something that will be sustainable
and something that the district will be able to use as a stepping stone from here forward.
