Big Lottery Fund: Anyone anywhere has the potential to change where they live, communities
can turn themselves around. In the summer of 2011 a bold scheme is being pioneered being
driven by the Big Lottery Fund and People Powered Change and Your Square Mile. Communities
across the country have been tackling perennial challenges by breaking them into bite sized
solutions.
Paul Twivy: You need local leaders doing it their way in their unique style. You can transfer
their learning, you can transfer tools, you can transfer grants but you can’t transfer
the local knowledge.
Big Lottery Fund: The idea is simple, focus on the square mile you live in, come together
as a community to identify the problems you face and then try to get at least one practical
solution off the ground.
Peter Wanless: Your Square Mile is an accelerator, it’s an enabler. It will hopefully make
of this stuff happen faster than it otherwise would do.
Big Lottery Fund: This film is about just one of the projects happening in Your Square
Mile.
Bill Lawn: Welcome to the Nan McKay Hall. Come on swing your hook up here, we need you
sitting down.
Female Speaker 1: That’s polite.
Bill Lawn: It certainly is.
Big Lottery Fund: People Powered Change isn’t new, here’s a community that’s been doing
it for years.
Bill Lawn: Mel, I need you to do something for me, just say hi.
Female Speaker 2: Just say hi, okay hi.
Bill Lawn: So that’s fine.
Big Lottery Fund: The Nan McKay Hall is owned and run almost entirely by volunteers.
Female Speaker 3: If you’d come up here there was nothing this hall wasn’t here
and we got nothing to do.
Female Speaker 4: If wasn’t for this hall I don’t know what we’d do, no shops, no
health centre, nothing here.
Female Speaker 5: Couldn’t do without it, but we can’t yet seem to get somebody to
build new one.
Big Lottery Fund: The porter cabin is a disused classroom donated to the community 30 years
ago, its dump, cold and expensive to run but they use every inch of it. Your Square Mile
is helping Bill apply for funds for new building nearby.
Female Speaker 6: He’s got a passion for the place;.he’ll fight tooth and nail to
keep it opened.
Bill Lawn: And up to now we’re still here 30 years, watch this space.
