This is all the first year architecture and interior architecture students.
Hi, I'm Emily and I'm doing a first year interior architecture.
Hi, I'm Dean I study architecture and I'm in first year.
Hi, my name's Rachel Weaver I do architecture and I'm in first year.
My name is Wong Yen Li. I'm in the first year of architecture.
My name's Harrah and I'm studying first year architecture.
This is the first project that they're doing. Their first experience of uni life and turning
up into this building which is going to be their home for the next 4 or 5 years.
Basically this is the Kinetic Aesthetics project that we got first week.
Well what we're making is a Rube Goldberg machine.
Pretty much it's just a chain reaction, starting from one team down to the last team.
We're gonna make this stuff, hit all that stuff.
And hopefully it should make it all the way across all the groups to our group project.
Which I'm pretty confident will work.
Each group has got 2.4 meters in which to basically do what they like but take energy
from the group preceding them, take it through their machine and hold it for 15 seconds and
then pass it on to the group following. And how they do that is completely up to them.
So a can slides down on that string, knocks over some more cans which makes the McDonalds
cup full of Jaffas fall through that Coca Cola box.
So their pendulum comes through, and cleans up our little Fanta can.
Which is going to set off the ball and it's gonna come down the scaffolding thing and
it's, I dunno it's just going to go off. Its gonna go off.
The Milo tin is going to drop on the scissors. Which is then gonna cut this wire here. It's
gonna leave like this ah leaver here drop, and it's basically going to pull all the poppers.
Some water is going to fall onto this, and weigh it down and then the worm will be set
free, which will hit that ball.
We're the last group so we're supposed to make the big ***.
They've really only had 3 days to put this together. So they've done a really good job.
You know to come and pull this thing together, to work as a team, to meet people they've
never met before.
And yeah, we just brain stormed and all just brought in some objects that thought, we thought
that might work.
For example this tape measure over here. We got a little lego car we found that, that,
that could push it. Which could provide us with a bit of speed.
Yeah his lego that has been with a massive amount of sticky tape.
We got some dominos there, books, you know boxes.
It's like being a full time tradey. You've got electrical, plumbing, string work - I
don't know what that falls under.
I was thinking of making a bridge like the Indiana Jones inspiration. Where the rock
goes on and saving the turtle by pouring water inside it. That was my idea, all along. And
these guys are like 'No, that's a horrible idea!' and here we are!
We started pretty much yesterday and we've probably put in maybe 5 to 10 hours of work.
A lot of late nights, but hopefully it'll turn out good.
We've got lots of strong personalities and leaders who are kind of you know controlling
the thing and pulling it all together. A lot of kind of passive people, sitting back but
again this kind of semi-organised rolling madness that's moving towards an end point.
That's, it's getting there, it's getting there.
Yeah that's the problem with group activities, you know. You're as weak as the dumbest person.
We're actually pretty confident. At the beginning we weren't but we've got it pretty much sorted
now.
Oh, out of 10 probably like a 9.5, yeah. Very confident.
We're about to test a section.
[laughter]
Oh, we've still got, they've still got some controlling issues to deal with and I think
they'll have it done before 5 o'clock. Yeah guys?
Yeah.
Oh this is definitely a weak link in the group without a doubt.
Right there, that's the weakest link. Our trouble is it doesn't touch the onion that
rolls on everything so this might stop and might destroy the flow. So, we're trying our
best to make it flow.
I think it's really important in just creating that sense of community and connection to
the university, and to the building and to your department. And starting to see faces
and see, know names, and work with people and you know identify yourself as being a
part of this building really early on.
We've learnt to sort of work as a team. We got to know each other since we're all new
and we don't know everyone.
Lots of team work. Listen to other peoples ideas and to just to, to just go for it and
see if you can have some fun.
A lot of problem solving skills, definitely.
I learnt not to trust my supervisor for the third time. That's one thing I learnt right.
Ah, probably yeah. To be very tolerant. [laughs]
I've met these lovely girls. We haven't. Like I didn't know anyone coming into this so it's
nice to meet some people.
Ah, good friend.
Good friend, good friend! Trying not to argue with someone else. And yeah, pretty much right?
It's really fun. I've met some amazing people. And yeah, I've really enjoyed it.
Ah, I dunno. It's really great seeing things work together and coming together, especially
like all these connecting bits. I don't know, I think it's very fulfilling.
As you move further on you look back at it fondly and you remember to go 'oh, yeah that
was, that was great, that was when I realised what I've chosen to do.'
