Yahoo! employees who work remotely might have to make the commute to work pretty soon.
All
Things D has the email the company sent out to stay-at-home staff. It said, among other
things…
“To become the absolute best place to work, communication and collaboration
will be important, so we need to be working side-by-side… Some of the best decisions
and insights come from hallway and cafeteria discussions, meeting new people, and impromptu
team meetings.”
Yahoo! asks staff members to make those arrangements by the
beginning of June. And the newly implemented change could affect hundreds of Yahoo employees.
Workers
affected include customer service reps— who never step foot in the office to get their
work done, and employees who only work from home a couple days a week.
This change
is only one of many since Yahoo’s new CEO Marissa Mayer was appointed in 2012. She also
headed the release of a new version of Yahoo! Mail and plans for Yahoo! to outsource some
of its ad sales to Google.
But this new policy has some employees questioning
why a company that is supposed to be on technology’s cutting edge is forcing its employees to adhere
to a more traditional office rule.
Writing:
“The new Yahoo policy for remote workers is incredibly
myopic. And unfair.”
And:
Most [The Next Web] TNW folks work outside an office. Most of us have never even met.
This Yahoo policy feels decrepit. We’ll see.
And:
“My next door neighbor
in Seattle worked for Yahoo -- flew down every month. Seemed wasteful.
Yeah, they
don’t seem too excited. Nevertheless, Yahoo’s human resource head Jackie Reses says in the
company email, “We need to be one Yahoo!, and that starts with physically being together.”
