Just like in the second video where I went over squats, I’m gonna go ahead and assume
that you know how to do a basic lunge, because the whole point of switching it up is to get
things a little advanced and to get your body to get some better results.
Switch It Up!
So, the first lunge that I'm gonna talk about, I’m gonna start all the way back here and
we're gonna do some walking lunges. Now, you have two options with the walking lunge: you
can either meet your feet before you take the next step, or you can just take the steps
without stopping your feet in the middle. Now, traditionally most people think about
doing these lunges forward. Why don't you go ahead and challenge yourself and do them
walking backwards as well. Just remember to push through your front heel and not your
back toe.
You can also do a plyometric jumping lung or a split jump, whatever you want to call
it. These are one of my least favorite exercises because they are so freakin' hard.
You obviously want to make sure you are like a master of regular split squats or regular
lunges before you attempt to do anything where you’re jumping, as honestly you would increase
your risk for injury there.
Another thing you can do is a side lunge, where you step to the side, sit into this
leg, this leg stays straight, and come back to the center. You can either concentrate
on one side at a time, or you can alternate sides. If you really wanna challenge your
leg, you can combine a forward lunge, a backward lunge, and a side lunge! That's a lot of lunges!
That's a lot of lunges! That's a lot of lunges! I know, sounds crazy. Here's what it looks
like. You can go forward, side, back. Easy right? Well not so easy after like 10 or 12
of ‘em…
Another great way to switch up your lunges (switch it up!) is to do a runner's lunge.
This is gonna work on your balance and stability as well. So you're gonna start down in a position
here like you're a runner at the starting line. Put your weight into your heel and come
up and raise your leg off the ground. So we go from being down here, up. Make sure you
keep your abs nice and tight, that's gonna help with your balance. Okay?
So this is just a couple different ways to lunge modifications and similar to squats,
lunges are also great exercises to throw other movements on top of. So, for example we did
those walking lunges: you can do a walking lunge with a bicep curl. You could alternate
lunging with a front raise!
The options are limitless! So, I know you guys have great ideas on this. Go ahead and
“Like” the video if you like it. As always, leave a comment let me know which one is your
favorite and definitely let me know you if you have a version of a lunge that you like
to use when it’s time to “Switch It Up!”
