Topic Guides are brief handouts
designed to demonstrate how PsycINFO can be
used to search for resources in a variety of topic areas.
The guides are available free on the APA website
as PDFs or PowerPoint files.
This supplemental tutorial demonstrates the search scenarios
in the Topic Guide about feminism
using the EBSCOhost platform.
Scenario 1:
A clinical psychology student is
interested in learning more about the ways in which
a feminist viewpoint can inform sessions
with male clients.
We’ll start by navigating to the PsycINFO Thesaurus
and searching for “feminist therapy.”
From the Advanced Search page,
we’ll now limit the search to those records that
include a male population group.
Our results include book chapters and articles that
discuss ways therapists can use the techniques
of feminist therapy
in treating boys and men with eating disorders,
a history of violence or trauma, and more.
These include discussions of how male therapists
can engage in feminist therapy.
Scenario 2:
An organizational behavior researcher
needs to learn more about the ways in which
gender-based stereotypes about women
play out in the workplace.
We’ll search the thesaurus for
"Sex Role Attitudes" and "Working Women"
Our results contain articles looking at the
experience of women in a variety of careers,
from those in the military or law enforcement
to women in office environments.
Scenario 3:
A women’s studies major working on a paper for a literature
class would like to supplement his own analysis
with a couple of articles on the ways
in which mothers and fathers
balance caring for their children.
We’ll search the thesaurus for
"Child Care" and "Division of Labor."
Our results contain articles that look at gender
equality in child care and household labor
as well as articles that also incorporate
aspects of work–life balance.
The scenarios and search terms
provided here are just a few
excerpts from the many relevant terms
in PsycINFO’s thesaurus.
If you aren’t sure how to use these terms
(which are called Subjects in EBSCOhost),
check with your librarian or consult the
PsycINFO Quick Reference Guide.
