Rumors about the iPhone 5S just keep on ringing in — and the latest? Fingerprint recognition.
That's definitely something we haven't seen from Apple before.
The buzz stems from a tweet from London programmer Hamza Sood. It's a code the developer discovered
inside the Biometric Kit UI folder in the Library directory of the new OS. The code
suggests thumbprint recognition on the home button. (Via Twitter)
9to5 Mac credits a source familiar with the new iPhone's development, saying, "The user-interface
for the fingerprint scanning system has been complete. This person also says that the technology
is focused around unlocking the phone, so it is unclear if it is built for a payment
system."
If the rumor is eventually confirmed by Apple, a writer for The Next Web says there's just
too much irregularity in a biometric system to rely on it solely — guessing it would
probably be paired with other methods like passcodes.
But based on Bulgarian designer and developer, Pavel Simeonov, that would defeat the purpose
of fingerprint recognition.
He wrote: "Fingerprint sensor in iPhone 5S is much more
than a gimmick. This + iCloud keychain = end of passwords." (Via Twitter)
Leading Forbes to note, "These 14 lines of code could indeed have big implications!"
Forbes continues, "This is not just about security, but also convenience. If iCloud
keychain converts and safeguards all of your passwords that you—and only you—can access
via your iPhone, then Apple will have scored a tremendous usability coup that potentially
makes its phone the key to your life—quite literally."
The 5S is expected to be released before the holiday season. It will supposedly also include
an improved camera, A7 processor and new voice control features.
