Hello everyone,
Today I have decided to give you an update on what I think is one of the most meaningful
projects that students have worked on at this University. Students first proposed the diversity
graduation requirement all the way back in 1987. After something like 6 initiatives it
finally passed last year. This lead to celebrations across campus as well as national news coverage.
So, the diversity requirement will have each student graduate with three credits in courses
that focus on power, inequality, marginality, social movements and effective communication
across difference. At the moment the focus is on course development. There are seven
diversity scholars in the center of teaching and learning that are helping faculty to develop
diversity at a greater level in their current courses as well as create new ones.
We hope this requirement will go into effect for students incoming to the University in
2014. We are really excited about progress on this initiative so let us know if you have
any questions with #ASUW60.
