Pass The Stoke Surf Community is really
a project that every single surfer has probably thought of
once in their life it is something that
wow I love to surf I want to teach someone else how to surf
The Pass The Stoke Surf Community
works with youth that are already in pre-existing programs so the youth will be in a mentor
program or in a foster home
or in a after school program coming
from the inner city is here in LA which can only be 15-20 minutes away on the
freeway
they haven't seen the ocean they ask you whats that line maria whats that line out there
the line, the wave, the boat what are they seeing
the horizon they didn't know what the horizon was
New Surfers
umm your going to rundown, say your name, gets some high fives
and you have to dunk all the way in
they all have done this before you so you are just joining the community I've learned to be a better
person
through this organization and the volunteers who come
come from everywhere all walks of life and they
constantly bring me joy and friendship and excitement the idea behind it is
such a gift to give to give to these kids
and again I get to be like in my happy place which is the ocean and the beach
like I get really excited to see how the kids change from week to week I come back
because at the end the day you know it's being
out here and put in the time in showing up and making yourself available
for questions and helping and being there you now front-and-center in front of
these kids
at the end the day that's that's the difference I've been with the program
since 2008
and what makes me come back is the joy that I get out
the teaching kids (stay low good excellent)
you don't you can't really describe how it feels to be on a board unless
you take somebody out you let them do it themselves surfing
helps to create opportunities for you to learn how to deal with life
I came just to take my mind out of
like to not to stay home to think negative stuff
to think something positive and just came down you
my name is Carlos and I am in seventh Grade
and I have been coming to this program for three weeks
Its fun.
I caught my wave, the first time i did it
dealing with the ocean and the changing in the ocean and
the changing conditions and smiling about it
and relaxing and understanding that its
you know whatever challenges you may have about there
you can overcome them or you can deal with them and you can
be done again today and and look around and say I had a great day
you know this one on at one on the had a great day
that's that's really what we're here for my joy is is to
when they leave their happy and they're waving and they want to come back you
when you Pass The Stoke and when you get to learn this little bit of
something greater than and take a moment to sit there and take a deep breath out
the water
we slow it down a little bit for them it changes
behavior you know and I and I get to see how that works in me and then we get
me week after week at work at the kid
They keep the Stoke alive
