What is the best way to cook acorn squash?
You want to eat what the pioneers ate, huh? You could bake it in the oven.
For how long?
Cook it at about 400F for an hour. But you need to scoop out all the seeds and cut it
in half first.
And cover it in sugar and butter.
Then the acorn squash is turning into a dessert.
And how do they make pumpkin guts edible? Sugar and spice and everything nice.
If you want a more modern solution, you can nuke it in the microwave. You can put the
whole thing on a plate, nuke for four minutes, flip it over and nuke for another 4.
When do you add the spices?
After you take it out and scoop out the seeds.
That does make gutting it a lot easier.
After you scoop out the seeds, though, you have to nuke it for another three minutes.
But then I’m done in about fifteen minutes instead of an hour or more.
If you want something different, you can turn it into squashy mashed potatoes. Boil it for
fifteen minutes, then cut up and mash.
That’s like boiling potatoes.
Exactly, and when you’re done, use a potato masher to mash it. Add sugar and spices to
taste.
I’ve heard of squash soup.
That is more work than baking, less work than mashing. You bake it in the oven for 45 minutes
before pureeing the guts and adding to soup.
What do they put in acorn squash soup?
Chicken broth, mostly, but some people add diced apples.
It would be easier to bake the apples with butter and cinnamon alongside the baking squash.
Might as well bake a chicken to make that a full meal.
