Hello and welcome to the CA ARCserve D2D how to Video Series – This is Configure Backup settings, parts 3 and 4
The first thing you should do after installing D2D is configure backup settings. D2D manages backup jobs according to the schedule and other options you specify. You can change backup settings at any time or just set and forget.
To get started, open the Backup Settings dialog. You can do so directly from the system tray icon or the getting started window, or just click Backup Settings in the task list.
The Backup Settings dialog opens to the Protection Settings tab by default. Configuring the options on the Protection Settings and Schedule tabs is covered in separate videos, so let's go directly to the Settings tab.
The options here let you more effectively manage your SQL or Exchange application backups.
Enabling the truncate log options lets you purge old committed transaction log files included in backup snapshots so you can make space for new ones. You can truncate - or remove - committed transaction log files for SQL Server, Exchange Server or both.
After a backup completes successfully, D2D purges the committed transaction logs according to this schedule. You can also specify the user name and password for the account with the rights to perform backups on this tab.
D2D verifies the credentials are valid and the user belongs to an administrator group. That's it for this tab.
Click the Advanced tab to continue.
Here, you can set up email alerts as well as trigger scripts that are performed on job outcome.
First the Notifications group. You can send automatic email alerts when jobs fail, succeed or if the space remaining on the destination reaches a certain threshold.
When you enable one of the Notification options, the Email Settings button is activated. Click it to specify email options.
Click OK when you're done configuring email settings.
Next, the Actions group.
You can execute commands before a job starts, when a job ends, or after a snapshot is taken.
Running a command before a backup is started lets you specify exit codes to check the result of that command or script and then run or not run the backup depending on that result.
That's the last tab in the Backup Settings dialog. Click Save Settings. D2D is now ready to manage your back up jobs.
But remember - even though you configured a schedule for your backup jobs, you can still perform unscheduled back ups whenever a need arises. View the Video, Perform Ad Hoc Backups for details.
