[Server & Application Monitor (SAM): A Guide to Licensing] Hello, my name is
Jeff Stewart, and I'm a Sales Engineer here at SolarWinds.
In this video, I will explain the licensing structure
within the SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor,
otherwise known as SAM.
SAM monitors your critical servers and applications.
The product is licensed in accordance with
the largest numbers of component monitors,
nodes, or volumes in your environment.
A component monitor can include,
but is not limited to the following,
a performance counter monitor, a service, or process monitor,
or a script or SQL monitor that returns statistical information.
Most customers leverage our pre-built and fully customizable
application templates for common applications
within their environment.
These templates were created by SolarWinds,
and offer expert advice on what you should monitor and why.
For example, our Microsoft® SharePoint® template
comes by default with 16 component monitors
that monitor various aspects
of your SharePoint application.
A node is any device that you monitor including
servers, virtual machines,
ESX hosts, UPS',
or printers. A volume is any logical
disk you monitor. Now, it's time to choose a licensing tier that best fits your
environment. SAM offers the following tiers:
An AL50 license,
an AL300 license,
an AL700 license,
an AL1100 license,
an AL1500 license,
and an ALX license,
which allows you to monitor virtually
an unlimited number of component monitors,
nodes, and volumes.
Let's take this example:
I have one (1) server with two (2) logical drives,
a C and D drive,
running SharePoint. I want to monitor the underlying operating
system using the Windows® Server 2003-2008
Services and Counters template,
which has 14 component monitors.
I want to monitor SharePoint itself using the SharePoint Server 2010 template,
which consists of 14 additional
component monitors. My
used or consumed license would look like such:
28 component monitors, 1 node license, and 2 volume licenses.
Please note, each environment will be different,
and you will work with a SolarWinds sales representative
to find the best licensing model for your
environment. If you already own other SolarWinds
Orion® products, the node and volume license count
are additive, so you get the best price benefit.

have a great day.
