I think today is a great step forward for rail safety and road safety here in Victoria.
What we’ve seen today is a trial, a proof of concept, of new technology, radio break-in technology.
Basically, if there is a train approaching, the train can send a message
or the transmitter here behind me can send a message to the driver in the truck,
it breaks into the radio system and it warns there’s a train approaching.
It’s simple, it appears to be very cost-effective.
From 2001 to 2009, we had 120 deaths and 172 serious injuries involving vehicles,
cars and trucks involved at accidents at level crossings and it will be great to see this sort of technology here in Victoria.
There’s no doubt if it takes off here in Victoria, that it will be picked up in other states around Australia
but, I think, for a long period of time, we’ve been looking for a simple, low-cost solution to level crossing safety
and, as I say, the proof of concept today, everything worked well.
and, as I say, the proof of concept today, everything worked well.
I’ve had a first-hand look at it.
As I say, we’ll work with the company, we’ll work with both VLine and VicRoads to see if we can advance it
but, as I say, today is proof of concept. Does this work? Yes, it does.
This technology has the potential to save hundreds of lives
because it should eliminate the possibility of trains and cars and tracks colliding at railway crossings.
