Numerous schools are set to open their doors to students tomorrow but one is
starting without anyone going into a classroom.
The Minnesota Connections Academy, a K through 12 virtual public school program,
begins it's classes tomorrow. It attracts some parents because of the
individualized style of learning.
"With Connections Academy it's real nice because you can go at your own pace
if there's an area that you're struggling with you can slow down and focus on that
area
and if there's an area where you can excel,
then you're you're free to do that and kind of go faster."
If you're interested in learning more about online education, there will be
an informational meeting tomorrow night at 6:30 at Panera Bread in Rochester.
Tonight while many kids are preparing for their first day at school tomorrow,
notably college students, a young Hayfield boy is preparing for a different type of school
and as an organization in his hands to do it. ABC 6 News reporter Sean Boswell
has a story.
Gabriel Jarrod is just like any other young boy.
He plays with his two brothers,
jumps on a trampoline, and dreams of developing video games.
Gabriel attends the Minnesota Connections Academy
at home taking virtual public school classes. "It's real nice because you can go at
your own pace.
If there's an area that you're struggling with you can slow down and focus on that area
and if there's an area where you can excel,
then you're free to do that and kind of go faster."
Drew Jarrod loves the individualized approach to learning and says the
Connections Academy
only allows Gabriel more time to be socially active. "We have more time
it seems to get involved in community service," and for Gabriel,
that means Operation: FUN! "I'm raising money to
get more park equipment for two of the parks in Hayfield." To get three new
pieces of park equipment for parks just blocks from his house.
"I was just thinking up a business idea in my bed one night."
New swings, a merry-go-round, and what he calls a Loopy Whoop spinner.
In Hayfield, Sean Boswell, ABC 6 News.

And as we mentioned, there are some other schools in our area they do begin tomorrow
that includes RCTC
Riverland and Nyack.
