DANIEL KENT: I'm the founder of Net Literacy.
We're a student empowered nonprofit.
And what we do is we're a digital inclusion nonprofit,
which means we try to teach digital literacy skills and
also provide computer access.
The idea initially came from students seeing the need that
a lot of individuals do not have access to computers and
the internet.
And we wanted to provide these important tools for students
and senior citizens and members of our community to be
able to access the worldwide web.
There's a very large growing divide between those
individuals who have computers and those who do not.
And those individual who do not are becoming more and more
at a disadvantage.
And it's almost nowadays becoming a disability.
I was really fortunate to have both my sets of grandparents
growing up.
And initially they were pretty uncomfortable with using
technology.
But fortunately both my grandfathers really sort of
started to embrace it, either through an old system called
Web TV or through smaller sort of handheld electronic
organizers.
And that really made me think that senior citizens are
definitely capable of learning new devices.
And that for both of them, it really improved
their quality of life.
And I guess this really taught me that anybody, no matter
what age, can learn new things and increase their
satisfaction of life.
What really gets me excited is to see so much
potential in youth.
Some of our volunteers are extraordinary.
Some of them are pretty good students and have a fantastic
opportunity.
And others have come from difficult backgrounds but are
also presented with this outstanding opportunity to
learn job skills, life skills, and important marketable
skills to help them in the future.
And this really presents them with a fantastic opportunity
to further themselves, either if they're core inner cities
children or students who might be homeless.
This really provides them a way to learn how to better
themselves as well as develop a marketable skill to help
them in the future.
A YouTube clip that I really enjoyed and forwarded on to a
lot of my friends was all of the clips from the Google
Zeitgeist Minds competition and summit.
It really shows that this is a terrific opportunity for a lot
of individuals to come together.
And it's a meeting of the minds or I guess an older term
is a Chautauqua, which all these individuals would get
together and listen to music and talk about everything from
philosophy to science and technology.
And this is just a fantastic opportunity.
And I'm really glad that a lot of people are becoming more
and more aware of this.
