exemplifies
what we do acting just connected with each other yes
having distant just disciplinary
you know collaboration amongst different light returns
it this is a privilege honor to see because i have to buy conceded silver
three times to the public library in some of you have probably come here
before
you know in two thousand seven
belated
gave it to come talk about the power point to point out member that term
i'd like to intelligence online communities in its just taken off like
wildfire
later two years later
we'd looked at wikipedia what happens when the library
connects for free students create entries
into wikipedia about university of san francisco us about the matter
engaging
endeavor
intended to doesn't end
join with ministered professor media studies to talk about
uh... hit that's really cool program that was caught stereotype

eating in san francisco
whichever paste or city to defend him city where we have so many restaurants
from rocked the prague

collaboration not just with instructors that students to develop a new
minor urban

resource center for supper culture studies in nineteen ninety six
at the university of maryland which
you know went from ninety nine sixty
two thousand nine
he also co-founded the september project many of you heard of that that was in
two thousand and for where
people joining forums in libraries to discuss freedom social issues and
libraries is just a really fascinating concept and this took place in the world
wide during the month of september each year
uh... notre dame tavis has written
and added it strain
various book book chapters articles and essays on
cyber quote your
education technology and collaborative learning
it's been invited to speak worldwide at various conferences and symposia some of
you may have seen him before

further out at virginia tech university and b
association of internet researchers conference which is our
across the world denmark
uh... you know
that's the last stuffing
indexes that impresses me about said
he really has a heart
he strives for excellence his teaching education which is
why did you know we s libraries
at discover focal mission too
educate the people who come to our towards greatly thesis
and not only that he just fine screech away in scene
students teach each other you cannot see if i could stick a library
paradigm
uh... if i have been mentioned before he also has a
transient for libraries which is why i think
it was so appropriate to invite him to death sentences go public library
so uh...
i guess now maybe it's appropriate guide logon
actually
you guys are taking pic then you know issue at stake here at the synopsis
you're gonna
here's an interesting sick
you god
media passport media plaque
so uh...
without further ado because the fasten seat belt for apple really three-time
well back
a big software just hearing on back
thank you so much terry

tripping
uh... i i i always love being in the room the of librarians predict
particularly excited because of that the divers give librarians here academic
librarians school librarians public library special librarians
uh... government librarians non-profit sits it's quite it's quite exciting
but there's also them quite a privilege and that there are only by
i was walking in here today it this morning and you know the library is
closed right
and i was able and saw the sign that said you know bayonet enter here and i
kind of walk did very privileged
you know
anti-terrorist unit was almost slow-motion night terrors a couple
people there
who couldn't get into the library
wall
thank you very much
uh...
i don't think you'll need a seat belt for that so i i don't think the legacy
doctype pati jerry's warning
ahead here
uh...
my name is david celebrate each of the university of san francisco i_t_t_ media
studies and environmental studies and has a two weeks ago and now that i the
new director of our new minor urban agriculture so we're very
we're very excited
and this fall what i did was like hot two sections of the class called intro
to media studies what's gonna happen today that if all goes as planned
i'm going to be discussing three different classes
uh... enter the media studies a classical green media in the class
called community garden outreach but i want to wants to focus first on one
class intermediate studies
and by this is a very interesting class
two sections of forty students we have eighty students and all
on andy it's your kind of classic
college history of american journalism american media class so we go one week
printing press one week newspaper one week
magazines the book industry
radio fail television computers
and
when the pass when i talked this may be twelve or thirteen fourteen years ago
i would spend maybe one or two weeks on this thing called uh... you know the
information superhighway
or the world wide web you know i do an entire lecture on telnet
there
here
but now what i do insight probably to think it's very important for students
to understand that there was media before the internet of course and that's
how much of our
so much of our digital media is influenced on buying
former media past media or still present media
but what's difficult now about teaching this class is is where do you start with
with the second part of the class
you start with the where you start with the history of the internet ***
discreetly getting to stop but they aren't you know do you
when i would like used to talk about these issues and i thought they were
very contemporary i'd be talking about the way ahead that maybe i talk about a
couple of computer games
my students are already way past and they want it's what they want me to get
to two thousand left
three two thousand twelve
but i didn't have to go back i don't know that there are some relevance in
these media we need to know about these media
and so
what you're saying but i want to begin with is i'm
my students this is about
thirty of the eighty students in introduction into intro to media studies
and it's a fine but convinced but what does it's something
but the noticing this year in something the i'm sure all of you have noticed on
is that they are
silently glued to their digital media
okay and let me just say from the start before we get snarky and before we get
some night
we are all glued to our digital media okay
so i i don't want to see you don't want to know that those and talk about that
antique tech self self
uh... let these five i decided to do in a sign of the distance and and and i
thought i'd be pretty easy
it was a basic media fast
island
stop using electronic and digital media to stop using it
and stop using it for as long as you can
so i did say go for twenty four hours as i say go for a day or thinking i just
said go for as long as he here
here's the assignment that we don't need to read all of that i i want that would
have all these lines to get there and and we can't just repeat this about
paying it click to look back at these
but basically i thought when you look at number two and three into you stop using
me to continue your fast for as long as possible
dahmer already
when you're absence from media becomes dangerous
impossible or unbearable
returned to that
okay i don't think that kind of dog latent uh... lawyer and he wanted to
make that one printer that this gets a dangerous
are you i don't want any herculean
uh... efforts to try to stay off line
what i had to do is and calculate how long they stayed off line
reflect upon it for a while our day and then write about it in a one page s
now before i start talking about the same point pointing in the i was so
fascinated with the results
fascinated distress disturbed
depressed
and i gave the assignment again for their final project i gave him another
media savvy media fast
and at the second media fast was quite straightforward do it again
you know to do it again but this time gullo there
no i don't think
longer
and also i want you to share one paragraph of your findings on the blogs
pedestal kind of makes us a little bit so in other words
babysitters immediate past
and then they went
wrote about in and then prickly paste a paragraph on my blog posts that happy
assigned okay that's gonna be very important
when i start talking about students and share
before we talk about the fact i think it's really important for us to talk
about
what we're talking about
one of our students white students everyday reality with with technology
and i wanted we're just to read
one of these uh... what are these reflections
prior to the ticket to explaining how might be a vast when i want to explain
how much modern media i came in contact with the route any given day everyday
myself awaits me at six in the morning i'd roll over to turn it off and what
the same our movement i'd
grab my laptop
i find this fascinating
that got lemon allstate between sleep
and princess miss is broken up with the laptop immediately first thing i do is
turn on the spot if i which i continue to listen to every free minute of the
day altering between myself on the computer
i don't turn on the news and begin my morning routine from about eight a m to
six p m my computer and cellphone either in my
or at my backpack
face book twitter gmail tech crunch read it
prescreened the website of which i worked my internship are constantly open
as well as chrome a_t_m_ worded spot if i
yes i'm aware that my computer fearing grandmother
stream agree
results were fascinating
this student who went at least went for about an hour
an hour
she said about it now
today
isn't that what the longest
who's from france
wet three-and-a-half days
yahoo burning the absolute all a per pair
they were so it's not like it intact
off and contact terrified
ekta
and i think a little bit suspicious
alleges that you could go over a few of the couple of things to look out for
them to get a couple of teams
on one thing that was really interesting is is this student said i told my
roommate about this assignment she want to try to fast with me
so about six thirty we closed our laptops telephones and turned off our
ruler icon stereo system
right inside put it down my phone ring with a text message
and read for it
migrant needs dot
honestly if she hadn't said anything i would have reached four to respond this
is one of my favorites because happen roommate not been there
she wants lasted too
three set
she went on to say that what her maker had et cetera had a conversation up to
three hours
many students talk about this having conversations with their roommates
one student said that she had a conversation with her roommate
the first that this was in december the first conversation they had had since
the roommate moved in two months ago
one thing that came up over and over its students
found something here's a quote strange and funny things happen to me and i had
no one to tell
and this came up a lot and i want us to take just a second with this business
gets really interesting
uh... another student said i've learned something and wanted to share
i saw something
and wanted to share using instead graham twitter face book flickr
it when it wants to come and make a note that these students are shears
they share
kit
and
to that but i want us to come to keep in mind their shares
there also a total weirdo sf
iraq absolutely and i think one of the things that came up over and over was
how do you want to take for plots
without my life
and so i said it if you do not
ad
at
we're not going to share with you how amazing my students are
and so i think that were in some ways laughing with them
and but i i also want you to tell i'd like to tell you what i want to tell
maybe if any of my students will want to be watching this video that you're gonna
see some amazing inspiration san students
we're gonna have to get through the tough stuff
student said you know after this aside that they kept saying electric cars
person sizable
if u
go over the past
arson good sheets asked by
and they said pre-taped
and we have to weight
whether we do
and i said on
good question
maybe principal reading materials if you look closely on the on the assignment
you can use print materials we could bring a book allowed to see it
or i think you know you could just sent not
or you could lesson
you could smell
but the students it can happen i do get the puzzle again on the bus one foot on
the bus
and that's what's really interesting pieces something that
i'm beginning what to do with themselves on the bus but they also use the
technology is the way is a force field around people
on dot just kind of the cliche about business
nellie person on me deeply
gentle people
coming towards them they want they want the upshot uh...
so what i did was
i've been spent the last month or so
taking on
there's eighty students think that this twice as hundred sixteen media
reflections
started putting them together and order you know
i once had the altogether
two-and-a-half-year-old combining through or really them all the although
her pintu unmanageable face
and i want to talk about for any
okay really didn't cut really quickly in the spencer family
pervasive technology
successful fast
and it's scary thing about talk about the
first thing is family and and there is a really beautiful um...
really beautiful post about this here's one student
when i told my parents about the media fast they were thrilled thought it was a
good idea
i have a great relationship with then we always make an effort to catch up and
talked about the week i think excitement stemmed from the fat direct action did
not have to be shared with other people that i would normally be texting
they were finally the center of attention the way they should be
always reset down together
another student said to her mom uh...
affects played to my mom when i was doing she seemed excited
as she did have to quote share any blackberry
another student
how did an amazing day huge really took off on this media fascists unit back to
thoughts this weekend locating the alchemist
went to a costume party
hung out with friends
took a walk make pizza
defy homework girl and those are my whiteboard
i feel that i could have gone on to this fast forever
work now
however as i finally turned on my phone to check the time
a
i noticed my mom called twenty three
and i cannot really wrestled with this with this particular reflection because
they in higher education and probably in in p two twelve we talk about it dot
helicoptered its
and these parents that are hovering
constantly bc i don't mean that with disdain but some point the parents are
gonna have to let go
also if you read on and she says you know
amount that i was
after getting my mom talk to my mom she said you know three calls for cole's
park off my daughter's yet
and i didn't really struck me really struck me i'm not really sure what how i
make sensible this
another student said that she went to she went to go back home for the weekend
for the past he thought i could do it usually with family
she found out that the family was the problem
brother white had like wheat
her mother kept up asking her to get on the computer to show or something
her siblings kept on asking her to do what i watch this dvd that's great
so she had to go into the kitchen where no one was and spend time away from her
family in order to successfully be in the past
and the second thing is i think this is something that rings true for all of us
were talking about pervasive technology pervasive media we don't want her to go
to a computer about the check their email
you know tool and media savvy
or not all of us go to a media center to get our mediates with us all the time
insisted it
technology is everywhere began to notice myself feeling technology without
consent
there's a t_v_ on at the party
my roommate was trying to show you pictures online
but board firms trying to get me to look at the map online
an acquaintance was asking me to help with their phone it was surrounded by
phones and computers at starbucks
another ticketfast from bt completely because whether i liked it or not
there was media placed in my mind feature
another student starts looking at all the things that she wants to do to get
away from her media fast
taken you need to go downtown
note check on the meeting about my iphone
all or whose many students had consistent
you have to try to work out without music
about but
that's impossible their parents
once dissected literally impossible
it's not
that let's not
so what's the ended up sitting in the private area for almost two hours with a
friend
just sitting
and talking
staring at peace
and actually that when this is a uh... this is one of my favorites because i
think that she was able to do something but most of my students can't do
which is just to do one thing to single task
and i i i i i can't talk to her later he thought it was uh... being clever
something i said you know
how long did you pick that
carries
sadat and teammates
it
one student
talk about pervasive technology
one student had i decided that the only way that she could get take the media
fast
is to be getting while she's
flying from los angeles back to san francisco
she be safe away from her me
okay
fine prompt she had about three or four delays and she started getting very
nervous
when she got to asap well that she won't be able to catch her commuter van
hasn't one-star you know that you instead
okay i won't make it
so she claims that asset phone she immediately panics because she thinks
it might define shuttle
a good idea
she said
i will go to the information keeps
and the kiosk they will probably have a match
s_f_o_ if i thought that after logo at the shot
she does that she goes to principles succumbs to the shuttle she gets the
shuttle backed up to this yet your honor
he said
we haven't had reserve you need to reserve
your wing nam
here
uh... spots
without texted
i think that was my favorite media fast ending
so what where what what are some of the successful
or some of the
strategy students used to be successful
going for a day
twelve hours twenty four hours thirty six hours
i noticed a couple of the first one in this is going to play and happily into
the second part ways
they noticed it
you
if you get through the initial pain
easier
semster many students edit
the first fifteen minutes for the hearts
sophistry what are they doing with the with
in my art
you've got the prepping for that sometimes it's the first fifteen minutes
for the heart first hour with hearts and many have been talked about breaking
through something
medicines and after twelve powers i've felt like i could go for three four five
days but it's getting to that original thing
second and i think this is something for meryl scientist to look into
successful fast for ones that students have a
heightened sense of s sounds
one student it too
uh... take a bus
uh... phone
all the way downtown and walk-up market something walked up market without music
something she'd never done
it for four years at u_s_ air
i noticed that the problems were brilliant she needs yellow
line
mentioned treaties pursue green
his sense of
and you should try it
you let
another instance that craziest system setup
i could do anything i'm gonna start cooking a meal and normally i cook
county illinois mymail playing a video game and watching t_v_ but this time i'm
just gonna
compromise mailing unit can stare out the window and she says
he says sorry
is crazy as this sounds
actually tested my lot more
himself
most of the successful fast-food collaboration
one student persuaded three or four of her friends are also going to medium
fast
and they had this like a dream day in san francisco going to pollution beach
going downtown helping a plus
and then go to a successful past
is what i would probably call kind of like martha stewart on crack
and speed
image under today's gendered most of these examples come from females but
there were two or three males
on this one st and i went on the cleaning spree clean my whole house and
it all possible homework for the week
around three o'clock i decided to go to the gym for about an hour it was tough
trying to run and not to listen to music
makes the whole experience much worse
on my way home from jim i stopped at lucky as to pick up some baking supplies
as well so let's listen to my time
all-night relay for resting from the long halloween way weekend watching t_v_
which was such a tease
i spent twenty minutes preparing my masterpiece and put it into the
i think that they started to read a book to help great book by the way
i've been persuaded one of my colleagues to get offer but come downtown to give
get some dinner it's like nothing else to do
she agreed to go to california pizza kitchen
we've got baking a cake
productive also wants it it's not just a
like martha stewart it's not just kind of busy work is being created she's
making something maker calls
but then the last category i want to talk about is what i call the scary one
and this is the one that uh... an exceedingly frightened by it
and i hadn't seen this come up more and more in the last fifteen years
but i've been seeing it happen a lot more and in two to three years and i
think it's something that will all recognize
the first one is
students
you know
hounding their cell phone
they started to realize
how all of their years
are constantly texting
and it was who loves to students to just say this but it was almost make tricks
like at the matrix that they were able to see what their what their fellow
students were doing
constantly on the phone
one student decide to do a little bit of psychological experimenter
she said during my fast another observation that i'm able to tell me
how much people my age taxed
saturday afternoon i was hanging out with my roommate to her friends we are
sitting around my notes at all
three of them have their phones in their hands the entire time
being the only person without a phone in a group of these four people is very
interesting in slightly scary
the second someone's followed by a greater chart
it it was almost as if the person's out of the room for a moment
it acts
there were no longer present in the conversation it was taking place
at one point was the only person that really was a staring at the phone is
everyone responded to tax and tweets and continued to speed
but somehow i felt like i was just talking to myself
and feeling with confirmed when all three girls looked up in the goes after
a month said
number of students talk about something that never witnessed before and there
could be
they call it
or a nervous tech
this is what it is
something that struck me during my past was america's take i have charge my cell
phone
eddie awkward moment
walk up the stairs wait in line
basically anything significant moment in activity
gives me the sudden urge to check my cell phone
this is almost
always done even though i am aware that there is nothing to check microphone
one student
the student who went for about an hour
she said it was really weird just said
line
another statement that you are these
distance and i think it might be gift basket seven p m on friday night was
getting ready to get coffee with friends
we're listening to music during that time
silence
creeps me out
it was almost title it just happens to obscure by at the bowling over that ever
since i grant that science creeps me out
last one
however on friday night i felt human my head during this media fast
you'd was home schooling might out
return on the move your played music
uncomfortable sitting in silence
all i could hear where my thoughts
was we agreed to be stuck in my mind
so these are our students
and this is eyes you know his science
it's on the part
uni
minds everywhere
it's everywhere
so what do we do
what can we do
what should we do
look at you with people interested in education
library
and working on this lab very modest proposal shared his proposal to me
i cannot think of these very modest proposals as a as a rage on
what works
i think that works
what what i think works
g_e_'s really hope this works
and i would share those with you
in the second half of it
i teach a class called green media
and really is a class about making about making food
and sell on students learn really quickly how as open about time
history
culture
the sociology of food
then they started learning about what makes a good recipe
extent bangkok cook
harvest
but most importantly they've learned how to tell stories about this
how to use on incident lekar used twitter
at his face book ideas belongs
and really what it is um... district additional initially thought that's what
this is just photos are reasoning to use these media i want to know the pistons
have to use social media
food as an excuse
use this in food is a perfect because no one seemed different
no
aren't we all had opinions on food i'm and it's it's wonderful to see the
students ranging from
someone who said i only any either
before this class i only the only thing that quote was published
to students who want to be the next rachel ray
and i are going to be the next three right
so something
something i do it this is the first day this is the first kind of thing
possible solution that i want to share with you and it's very simple blind
something i use and almost all my classes because like this
law
before you plug
said simple
and what it means is like
tengok your body on the computer off your media brick a little bit
and many people back and talk about it
his
scrubbed out there
are for your call
screen media
so one of the assignment by half the students to do
is on
to go to the farmers market this time it is very simple
goto wonderful san francisco farmers market
find attached below
fruit you've never cooked with in your life
rack
finder recipe
crockett
and tell me a story about got sick
but that suggested
students it's not at all
students start coming up with these incredible stories they start
interviewing the farmers
they start finding that's the bulls that they've never seen before
they asked questions like one anytime they does in this farmers market
in december
little inside joke for its seasonal people
such an
don't let love about these projects is there not to get this is something i've
been talking about probably sixteen thousand seven but they're not just
giving papers to professor silver
their uh... their making work
for what
their tweeting about it so all of their friends
family and followers can can read about it ekta sharing media they're sharing
their work and i'm really proud of their work
but or is
so so i can just tell you one more prone to sign is like basically say you can
only have four photographs
if not these students will have a hundred and seventy two photographs
at the dentist crazy chit-chat
they're crazy with their cameras you know
so i said i want for photographs
one of the farmers market
one of your recipe one you cooking in one of you sir
and that correlates to works are food come from
how did you learn how to make it
how did you make it
could you share
what i feel alone and this is fascinating this is a real i'll predict
for me
is that the student's parents genius with digital media meaning recipes
some of the photographs you'll see likened hypothesis cookbook
and then texting mom simultaneously right
and it is always honest clapped happened concede that that
but in this case one student ditto proven project and he just
the salute tax message
ma with mike
it mom won't do it you know it
but also with my departments lee marlys all in their home
and sometimes sister sometimes fragment there's there's a different people
getting involved
i think we have a couple of brothers getting all to another father so far
but what i want to do
with most of these projects love these projects and and the great thing about
these projects is that the students
thing and i think so you may be thinking you know
how did they get to the farmers market there's a ton of digital me
so i wanted to do is right now i'm not talking about stopping using media
peptides gone
you can't do that
so
and i'm not even saying on the trading status to lights spend a day without on
offline do that to them
i would do that to you guys
so my students have been very advanced strategies
to find the farmers market
maybe do a little research on epicurious
to find out what's in season before that
it's very interesting online you offline strategies that are coming together
that's called basically contemporary
but wasn't struck by it with this project as much as i'd like to do by the
way i keep it again
first in first shot
you know i said okay for you next homework assignment i want you to do
your last assignment again
you know when students like even
we've already done
so
not bad
did
and i said you know six different season you might find something new with the
farmers market wall
p
all right thank you know that wonderful bok choi grievances circuit where you
can make third wave fourth one
and this in the back of my mind there was that there is a
uh... famously non who taught are at university of san francisco i i don't
know burning right now and i can't find out like
sheetrock art classes
and for the first part of the semester what she had the students to do is to
drive bays
and she happened rather base one hundred and fifty first couple of months
and students when i was a u_s_ about years ago we had a number students
calmed talk about that class
students and parents exit
talking about the sixtieth seventy if drawing ice finally began to understand
face
and i i thought this was superb performance is something that's really
form most of my work with online with the project began
again
judea
and now you're finally start understanding
but one thing struck by what this is much as i'd love these
ingenious strategies to get a recipe
very few of them only once started with using cook
so i said we need a field trip
we need a field trip
and i took the field trip to
my absolute on
favorite art uh... clean library
which is the key exception
i think it's four i think it's for at north helping out but he said
yeah *** art
and the key exception is ourself
it's got all kinds of food politics from justice book scott
it's got cookbooks
justin with wayne making bread right
it's thought that yes it would way of making soup
two books i write red
i don't understand exactly what subjects away but it's good
this
and at the students look at these cookbooks
blessed your assignment is to find a cookbook
find a recipe in cooking
and
at the results were very interesting the results were interesting i i don't think
it for the good news is that they
they have many of them who got the project left the cookbook executors
it's not like it serious
they tell stories
you don't just talk about how to make the same uh... habits of came from their
grandmother
it's collard greens but happy for new growing up
sickly comic you're stories store
but then the other with is
still wrestling with this guy is so maybe you can help me is that i don't
think they understand the book technology
i had to tell them you know there is an index
because of him with the project like this if you come home with a little bit
bashing hale
what distance doing going through each page looking for ko
looking for a little search button that they can put in
hello
one student clades
that she went to google books
entirely
defined webpage and she's a very bright student
so what what i mean what i'm going to thinking about this project i need to
talk about book technology
in-depth
table of contents
references
footnotes
if you like these collard greens you might want it definitely chat out the
corn bread on page fifty four
the original hypertext hyperlink being
but i want i want to just kind of with with this this is the first kind of
solution i think this is kind of a simple one i've been using this for
about five or six years and it works
logoff before you go
and i think that this is a quick point
so much of our students research ecology if that's a word
that the ecology of the space that they are in when they're researching you
understand that most of it is entirely on the laptop
and we know this but i think libraries are doing great jobs trying to figure
that out okay so to recap account to be text message that do we have aimed at
what what can we do to read it on face book
what do we do to meet our students where they are
and i think all those are valid and we need to keep doing that
but we also need to explain to students that if you want to get the story on the
farmers market w dare
go to the website for the farmers market
or go to the wikipedia page and tell me how important bark at the ferry building
farmers market is ductility smelling c here talk about it half the people about
easton
from our topic we blog optimistic misunderstands
i'm going to go
talk about another class
that was green media that happened in spring we just finished the some after
yesterday's from the press and that'll be my excuse
but we just finished on the semester just yesterday and support for these
classes and talked about greed medium this next class community garden
outreach
our classes that have just finished yesterday
we have a garden on campus has anyone how many of you are familiar with u_s_
campus resort
and a colony of him
keep your hands up how did you know that we have a beautiful organic garden on
campus
okay a couple you know and i hope that all of you can visit
uh... we have a wonderful want
eager garden on campus beautiful
it's beautiful it used to be a uh... kind of a vacant lot
overgrown with shrubs
which was used by r_o_t_c_ is a way to simulate iraq
ait india iraq in san francisco no
over time about five years originally two professors melinda stock in media
studies environmental studies himself how in architecture environmental
studies
make a living learning community for years after that we couldn't developing
this organ at minor we out there
uh... a beautiful garden on campus
and one of our
one of the things that we try to do as both students and faculty i think i
could get that food
who gets the from
and we've been working a lot with booker t_ a community center a committee senate
it's just a bike ride away from the campus and so every thursday students
uh...
harvest fresh produce invited over to their food bank
were also working with it through the committee kitchen at saint separate ends
on where they have these commuting nielsen weeks supply fresh produce
but our main uh... thing that we do is we wheat harvest of fresh produce
cop with for
and that class that's in charge of for instance called community garden
outreach
and so the students learn how to cook
electric delicious suits
salads for toddlers
and what we begin with the sounds a little bit hokey but we're in san
francisco so it's ok we begin with our sacred tape on the sacred table is all
the stuff that we grew ourself
with accepting about butternut squash out there
but we we begin by saying you know this
let's begin with what's in the guard
something that is for intended
almost all of our students policy probably say uh... most americans
what i love about this photograph and hoping you're seeing this i don't think
i have to say this but what you're saying is kind of a wonderful
collaboration
and what you here in the class is a whole bunch of we hours
our forms can skip the awesome
we can't do it this way
something going on collaborative
so that we prepare the food and five times a year we have a farm stand on
campus
we feed students
defeat librarians
we feed jesuits
briefing faculty i think we've been no defeated couple administrators
uh...
and this is that
this is it
and i have to say that the food is incredible
ferguson probable
doesn't accept the cafeteria
it is real
and what you see it the best part of farm stand i think is when you start
seeing this
uh... right
library in the background students and committee garnell reed a lobbyist in
fact recognized from last year students work but we're basically growing we're
growing food and growing community
and so what we're starting to see is a lot of kind of a collaborative space
okay again keywords collaboration
here we are a perfect day
keep this in mind this is
this is lizzy
one of the greatest u_s_ students and history if you accept britain to come
back to her in a second
but i want to stop at this photograph because i think this
brings us to number two
number one is long gone before you blog on i think socket one would be
called something
compacted carries
or maybe we can say especially from libraries
hoechst
com active curiosity
and what i thought about the society i did
i think that the people u_s_ have made recognized some of these people to me
this is probably my favorite photograph of the year
what you're seeing is
to students
rest said
sharing their on held apparently to
portuguese soup made with that colors
they're sharing it with tear rolled
who has been
working in the garden in the u_s_ destined for about five to sixty years
he's about as as experiences that comp and lily who's a former student in other
words
former students who are supposed to know more than the current students
are being school
and educated blight
they're sharing information
him
and i can i just want to take a second to execute to i see a huge difference
between those two words
i think it all of us can give examples of t_m_
too much information
and i can give you
billion examples of my students sharing too much information
or hispanic students start sharing their periods
disciplines opec max about information a little bit more about questions
and i think that what this is getting a bit late as i said from the beginning i
think this will get more and more of the parents who my solutions
i'm starting to think that were happened we see
coke curiosity
that's the place we should climb onto
as educators
and as librarians
to go towards collective curiosity
here's the farm stay on
yours wonderful beautiful police and library
apartments there
but you may be asking what's that
what's understand these people
what's that right there
is the bull by the police in the library
where there's a collective curiosity
the library should be
dance collective curiosity occurs
teachers
what's so great about this collection
is it's a collection of gardening books books about sustainability
books about cooking
books about food culture
food justice
you'll see this you'll see beast pictures that wonderful
so students have a chance to get some fresh food again
did not get the book related to that
when you when you start seeing these different shots you will notice
baiting each shot by police and library comes closer to the farm stay on
three things about this about how this came about on
i think the spin about for a good for three different reasons for why this was
successful with three different reasons first of all it's i've worked with the
power to librarians and gleason library
i do think that group b_ entries comoros he comes here
freezer gap
and we've worked on these kind of exhibits now for about
three to four to five years
and i think that anytime you have a work in collaboration
with another person whether your school library academic level go with it
so i know when i do when i can just leave it at the retreat
can we do some kind like yes
all right
and the second thing happen is when i talked to um...
so a couple partner in the room
and we sat down and i think you should be away
we can't bring the library outside
stupid forms
and i was kinda shot
because
i mean this with love
i feel that librarians like professors
to craig
although reasons why something won't work
you got allot
but i just have to say this because i i i do have to say that librarians your
you're like professors you line
then we can only tell you about that person
and they're just waiting to hear about the end of may have six reasons why this
will never work
bring books outside of the library
what students should let's
and what should
was very acting very strategic
let's make it happen it's a good idea let's do it
we'll figure the rest out later
third-person alternate snap snap
right over
and that did something really interesting sorry do on the right with
that goatee
he did something very interesting at the end of this year's about two weeks ago
where with our last for stand
k_-mart treaty sheepishly said david you're alone
i was wondering
who's doing the farm stand next year
ended when he was going to say that you know melinda exactly
what
we do it again next year
has absolutely and i miss having you guys were involved in c
but it seems to be put to said
too often
libraries that librarians are waiting for the collaborators to come to them
are waiting for that invitation
if you guys
i'm totally out of the surf and if i'm stepping on the west coast and being
rude just tell me you know it's fine
i think sometime
how can match hearty thought about that this has to be institutionalized
with i can't even imagine right now what forms fear without the line
but to happen librarian coming to meet are really starting to plan for next
year password collaboration
and what we're doing and what we're doing
it's basically called maybe
collective cure-all
or hoax
collective right
now mon block says eleven thirty five but no it's not
is
okay and you know what i'm gonna do
i'm going to
on
within two minutes doing about ten minutes work
how's that sound can i just have to wear minutes
okay
on i do want to say before and dot is that
and i have one part of one more thing to show you about about u_s_f_
but i also want to say that libraries are involved it all the time in
cultivating collective curiosity
and i want to just give you two examples really quickly
one arab all of the many
on seed libraries that are happening all over that area
i see them at richmond public library see them open public library i see them
in san francisco public library different branches and i think that
if people are really interesting i know people have made a list of which seemed
like the respect
here's how it works you basically have cd's for anyone to
to borrow
basically r_o_t_c_ spinster gardening okay great
that's not enough
i think library should say this is wonderful to have a seat library
start moving art hearings books right now
right next to it
looks like an exhibit let's say
massive collared seeds
if there's a book on how to cook collards that you'll need
four months from now three months
why don't we say hey you know what you can *** scenes
could you take a picture of the plan
you could you take it when you're leading
and could you give back to act so that we can feature this
is after all or
i think that where you see that in my obviously as you're saying that some
focused very much on food
we could we could see the same thing about so many different topics
uh... how can we
cultivate and host
collective curiosity
the other example forgive quickly and as a super quick is
is an example this coming from on escondido public library if you know
library you
manifests
um... this is a wonder one person technical
library you've got a of small
uh... helped
you when you're acronyms
uh...
helicity
uh... purchase a little bit of equipment
trains library staff on how to make how-to videos
and then collect members of their community
film
uh... videos about how to do stuff
appropriate how to sell a quilt
have products hahaha
my favorite
and what i love about this is
once they get the video
they put it on their website in the catalog
so the next time someone is searching halfway through our town tomahawk
they'll find this video
from heat
from the community from the arts
these brilliant project it's really exciting watch this kind of stuff grow
it also i believe came out of uh...
some you're very familiar to all of us bitter budget cuts they were having
difficulty
replenishing more the materials they said you know what sounds crazy
at our community create materials
and that's what this started
the last one it's a it's a politics for the time management
this last one is the one and the most excited about
on and its it's it's one that i think to myself cheese i hope this works
uh... a lot of people are talking about attention a lot of people talked about
attention span
you've just heard what happens with media as we've got a major problem
and he he he thought i had no idea how we're gonna felt this way it's its
deeply deeply troubling as an educator's deeply troubling as an educator to see
this happen so quickly
on the students on seeing this year artist profoundly different from what
what they were two or three or four years ago
when it comes to attention span
when it comes to single task or it comes to deep knowledge thinking of something
for very very long
victors a major problem and and that's pretty light
so a lot of a lot of educators are starting i want to talk about of maybe
will bear technology iraqi amherst college said
we're gonna have immediate payoff for the whole day no one use technology are
just don't think that's that's the way to do it
i think personally that what we need to do is start to
finding introduced topics that are so interesting to students that we will
capture their attention span
and i'm talking about attention span that's not enough power
and that's not good day
but that's the season
and so what we're working on uh... i guess this would be
the third solution
is were working on something you he he you know in san francisco we talk about
seasonal cooking and we talk about seasonal recipes
we're really interested right now in seasonal syllabi
and we're interested in county start
building curriculum that's not for a single classroom is not for a single
lecture
but basically exist
for
three months
and so what does this look like uh... indeed occur but not minor we have class
is called urgent add colin fall
urban add colin spring
it's only offered during spring
you're not going to offer victory went over not being offered during summer
because the stuff that they'd better
only is relevant during that season
he saw some of the uh... bombers farm state
all of that stuff the seasonal so what we do
what we do at the beginning of classifieds going around the room asking
students you know
if you know how to cook and what some of your favorite meals in a spark
involves so many deals that have nothing to do with the season
but it's important to just start with that then we back up and we say you know
what
let's get in touch with the seasons
let's get in touch with what we can harvest how to get that lets walk to the
guard
what's out there what can we cook with
and for some of us
i think some people at my people give you the same doc
for the others
i think for students who grown up on in-state players students have grown up
with their parents cooking for them or just basically contemporary human beings
who think that everything is available at all times
cyst for item
and so what we're trying to do right now is try to figure out is there a way
that we can create syllabi just go into the season
this is very difficult as most of us are trained to make syllabi they say
and to do this first week in the second week in this third we can go exactly map
it all out
stepping back and say is it possible that we can southeast open-ended syllabi
and let the season's dictate us
what we can be doing
and the global look all that this is to try to get the students
to think about something over an extended period of time
again five minutes not in our normative week
but for three or four months
i want to just stop i just want to begin i want and started with one photograph
yes
computer works
single wheat
single wheat
in here cleanup i think if you're not listening to carefully right it politics
which
actually
very are from the truth
now what i'm gonna say is on the top just briefly in finnish stop this spot
uh... about something that is much less than a hundred forty characters
and they look at a camp looks like about twenty twenty three
when i first saw this process was from the u_s_ u_s_ garden from lizzie you got
to remember the photograph of lucy that these are all time best gardner c
chief we just had a conversation yesterday our faculty meeting trying to
figure out how can we get these busy to teach classes extraordinary skewed
when she posted this new beginnings at first i said wait a sec
but covered up
jeremy picked as me
good teacher in the immediately like what we're doing is trying to protect
weeks you know i think
i think about that new beginnings started thinking about
what does it was thinking about
i think what's going on here is that there's a double meaning it's very
tension
on one side what you see
our new starts
he's a new starts
on the other side however
this is just the beginning of the starts
he starts i believe charted anyone knows better please correct me i believe he
starts chart
whatman pcs with this chart is not just
starts
she understands that still be
planting these the route fall
and that they'll get probably big enough to start harvesting to begin harvesting
in late fall
and then comes wonderful winter when he starts getting really cold
and starting pay only shelling i think it's a little bit more flavor
adam hochberg harvesting what with the full mature chart will start harvesting
patents bring
putting it didn't work for todd's
and and uh... offering them perform spin
so i think what happens is
i went back in the senate sleeping quincy then everytime c this is the way
that she sees her curriculum
it's not something that just that she did today
it's a task that she is doing constantly
for the seeds
its time
it's embarrassing uh... of my time management is very embarrassing but i
would like to on thank all of you and what i want to do is
in particular and
statement calling jerry we had a wonderful conversation at holy names
university library
and just had a wonderful brainstorming session and i
i really enjoyed that i can sometimes i get talks and they tell me exactly what
they want me to say right tell them exactly what i would say
but i think that there's something really organic about treating ideas and
sharing ideas
and i love that day and as a thank you very much
but but i think i've equally important to have incredible crew of librarians at
gleason library
and uh... i'm not trying to make you jealous but at least library rocks and i
want to keep them very much
analytic big two thousand twelve thank you very much
just and curiosity does landmine telephone count and uh... media
excellent question u_s_
cuz you targeted
carrier pigeons would not
yes
mailing your printing
two-year cafeteria
so that baking in reality check as well prac
on inside yes and no and
hot
they have asked for respectfully patients of some days when a out
our our university like many universities the cafeteria is run by a a
corporation or liberty
it happens to be a kind of a green corporation whatever that means these
days but
they do do a very good things and they also are trying very hard to help but
will produce
so one day here
it's kind of uh... we become model citizens and it's if you don't have like
you know
itself features and dono ko from the u_s_ that card
back also think it's as collaborative arts reports they are
comparing but by its because our that
our food is better and and the students there's such a real community that you
just don't get me classic cafeteria
so we tried to
we've been trying to be under the radar with the cafeteria as much as possible
patrick it's starting to get more more difficult to do that
i had a forced media fast when my battery died
uh... cricket and so i can look at next by us to see when i was coming but i
waited and it came usyd and i had so much fun listening to the tourists on
the bus that idon't don't look at my phone on the bus anymore i'd i really
like listening to their conversations and if you're going and i was on the
robots and its selling her tino that you're looking at it
it
and i think for biting riders that's really important to just learn how to
receive
information that you may not have been looking for kids all around you
i want to thank you from the bottom line
heart for introducing young people to single tasking u_s_
you up at the risk of in the unity of possible future employer
how about reno in once in awhile
singing and you know i know
i'd really agree about the idon't know r_e_m_
i don't know if i made that clear but i really truly did admire the student
conspirator pizza
i'd be very truthful like i i do
i think that was one of my favorite medi-cal for flex it because i would
call that the i don't think she was in the past i think she was just being
present in the moment
and on
i think they
i think it's difficult enough to get this generation or our generation all
the best to single task
but i think it's even more difficult to get this nothing i think it's
just as important
uh... anika common i think it's interesting i used to teach american
sign language
to range of kids in high school and up and um... i noticed a difference when
they would come in the class they be on their phone
looking up at a time instead of looking at me
i made them put their funds away
um... alright and it is really
do and attacks in the classroom and i told i have to talk to my mom i have to
check in time i can't say learn sign language visual you need you guys
and i need your respect and at the same time i think
it became a benefit for them
because from head to toe the really n_f_l_ classier involved it's it's uh...
disrupting your body's involved i you need your attention
and so they could be on their found it made them so receptors timeline learn
without my technology
was a really big challenge for them but it to get better
exactly and i think that's an example
that would be an example of what i mean by once you get past the time first
there's the horror
and and
fear but once you get past that they start learning that this actually works
pretty well
yet are they get the fascinating comment with respect to sign language stuart
just another element to it thank you
uh... so you mentioned to the poor steal the media force killed on the past three
which of course we're all familiar with and c and it's
time disturbing when somebody aicte like to think of being in the community being
present but you also we're talking about the woman in the furniture three friends
who are on their phone that people need for skilled when they're around their
friends example i_q_ like i mean what
how do you guess what
i don't know but i think he
completely articulate it very well and and that's it you just made that step
it's not
act is one of our people you just said anne
before spilled on the bus facing you guys we've all done
right we've all got but it's the bus to the bar or the airplane
i got my new yorkers stopped
five what happens when you're doing it looks like friends and so intent this i
think that
that
example right there is what i'm talking about when i say that the last two or
three years there's a huge scale upward and just kind of the pervasiveness the
technology
and the pervasiveness of communication throughout
at the same time i think i can and all of us can name
a number of wonderful examples of what they did with that technology
to make something happen
uh... and so i don't wanna bet on that and i think that there are some
interesting things
it's very difficult it's a science fiction preventing a science-fiction
movie with all of us sitting around like that
uh... interesting idea this comes from humble state ones me
campbell everything self-serve one oh
standing
you have to go out to the bicycle hooked up
uh...
wonder
unite
it would be interesting
facet of the technology is all the stuff
stomach
so your at you and like
or
uh... like light
and you know we which develops what maybe come up with different kinds of
speakers and
someone once said to me what you're doing is anti-technology and i said isle
of technology and also like you know i that paper and pencil technology to have
a pedal power technology and so
there's a lot of different technologies but i think he
i think what you're saying it's right there
if we can get our students to uh...
the kind of a baker ito city i want to get you can't you can do whatever you
want to get tough to make it
because that immediately
immediately suggest one thing
you cannot do in the economy nothing that makes a question and if you if you
want to solve the question is really nice to talk to your buddy and that but
he may have some other answers and i will be held this collective curiosity
and i think that's what i i think that i was just talking to someone who's
talking about how
uh... that one element at the uh... the new teen center
here in this libraries could have kind of maker he felt strictly and i think
there's something about julie yourself technology it is very necessary for the
students and so i will tell you see draws them in once again
or bike blenders
yeah i'd just wanted to know is any of the students in the reflections
talked about uh... how they will come up in the morning without him
yet excellent question okay
so the information
uh...
the major difference between the media asked one immediate past too
was the media fast to they started getting strategies
the first strategy day was to give their phones to friends second strategy
uh... temporarily suspend their face book
third strategy in this is almost
but many husbands to the first reggie
change the passwords on your laptop
obtain wanting to get your point so in other words they start to figure out
i don't have the power to do this but if i can't reply stuff if i can log onto my
computer
i'll be okay
but that that now
leaking
westbury difficult
so the students get a number of things uh...
most of them spend the night at friends are partners houses
one student's claims to have had a one-night stand in exchange
for a wake-up call
on the like
phrase on it
died on the phrase walk-up shaver whatever on
but i don't want that also just started doing strategic basis was that this was
my favorite with the fact that was on
one student asked to be on the other side of the door and because the door
mates have loud music in the morning always bookmark
but the other students was so wonderful she said
you know
i hope it might treats
and uh... signed comsent and it won't be a
thank you very much
well
if i can say is wow acting that gave us a lot of lit for hot
and uh... thank you david that was wonderful and you also give me a favor
because i realized when i spoke earlier and introduce myself i think i said he
genuine sampling in june appears to be so thanks for the plan nine life
at one p looking for coming this is a return today in a wonderful cape and i
hope to see you have many more being at a pen i want to thank all the many
volunteers to make this happen today
and and
also went to the plug for sehr find out about him
