So, Arles for 42 years has been the place where photography meets every year
like in Cannes you have cinema in Arles you have photography.
This is the place where all the galleries, the collectors,
the publishers, anyone dealing with photography and the advertising business
gather to meet with new ideas in photography and new photographers.
This is why we do a lot of experimental projects
and nowadays going experimental has a lot to do with printing.
This is why we needed a partner,
a permanent partner that always innovates with printing solutions
and we found with HP answers to our requests.
So, this is why we’ve been partnering for the past five or six years now.
We had a chance to meet with JR a long time ago
and he’s presented, in Arles, various projects of his around the world.
He’s a photographer that wants a direct contact with the public
so he involves the population that he´s photographing
and then when he shows his pictures it’s always in a public place.
The way he does it is by printing on large format paper
and gluing that on walls outdoors and it’s incredibly efficient.
The more he goes, the more his project is political and involving the people’s concerns.
So, the last project, Inside Out,
which is the one for which he got the help of the TED awards in America,
is a project where he gives away now his system to the public
so anyone can now shoot a photo of oneself, send through email
or in this box here in Arles, in this photo-booth
and then get a print that he goes and pastes wherever he wants to protest
whether it’s a government or whether it’s his mother!
