I was injured in Afghanistan, in a Logar province, it was a pretty big IED, pressure plate. Our
vehicle got hit, the vehicle went up on its hind legs, it came down, bounced and landed
on its side, my door top-side. Pretty much I shattered everything below the knees, broke
a shoulder and got quite a few burns. Through some trials and tribulations in regard to
surgeries and trying to salvage the legs, I ended up losing my left one, below the knee.
I like it, it has some spring to it some bounce or whatever. It lets me walk around and I
can do a little bit of running , working out and daily activities in life or what not.
Not too heavy in my opinion but then my experience is very limited. The downsides I can't really
articulate it or move it as much as I could an actual ankle, I guess that comes with the
territory of losing your foot. Pros and cons more so than that... I like to walk, I'm not
a big fan of the wheel chair and it gets me out of it.
While we were trying to salvage my legs, in the wheelchair it was a little difficult.
It wasn't quite a light at the end of the tunnel. Then, we had to remove the leg and
then shortly after that I was able to to drop my leg or my real leg and started fitting
for a prosthetic. Then eventually I was able to walk and the light at the end of that tunnel
seemed to get a little brighter and come quicker. I wasn't the biggest fan of it, the idea of
losing a leg. I was a bit emotional at one point but I'm not that way anymore. I've been
able to do whatever I can, my daughter was born shortly before I lost my leg, so the
running joke was "who's going to walk or run sooner, me or my daughter?" I was hell-bent
on making sure I could chase her. I've been doing what I can to improve and it's not the
end of the world, some things are going to be a little more difficult and have a little
more extra effort put toward. I can do pretty much what I need to do, I can get up in the
morning, I can go get ready for work and go to work. I can play with my daughter and hang
out with the wife, pretty much everything I did before, I can't really complain too
much.
