I’ve been stopped and frisked a few times
but the most traumatizing memory for me with this policy was
when I was on my block, 134th street between seventh and eighth avenue
which is pretty much neighboring to 32nd police department
and I was coming from school,
I had a pretty decent book bag
maybe my sweats and my hoodie is what attracted the cops towards me
but we’ll never know
but apparently they were watching me,
watching me for what I don’t know
and they came from the opposite way of the street
coming from seventh avenue driving toward eighth avenue
I’m crossing the street and three cops get out on me an ununiformed car
and they immediately put their hands in my pockets
before asking me do I have anything on me that I wasn’t supposed to have.
I did not have any weapons on me at all I had a school book bag
and I did have a nickel bag of marijuana on me in my pocket, my right pocket
and unfortunately I guess I broke the law by possessing marijuana
but never the less I was still pretty much violated my civil rights being checked
not being asked any questions. I was taken to the precinct, and given a ticket,
stayed imprisoned for about eight hours, fortunately I was not booked,
but I had to go court a month later and they gave me an ACD basically saying that you know
not pleading guilty and because it’s my first offense that in a year
this will be dropped off my track record
but unfortunately I’m about to graduate from college this is something I have to deal
with
because I am a father and also a husband so I have to provide for my family
now I have to deal with questions on applications “have you ever been convicted of anything?”
no I’m not a criminal you know and unfortunately I was thrown in the system
for a little bag of marijuana that should have never been confiscated or searched for.
