This is Martin Shervington, and in this video I want to give you an overview of how
Google+ is Google. Echoing the words of Vic Gundotra,
Google have put a 'social layer' across
all of Google's products and services.
And also there is an aspect where Google+ is a 'social destination'.
So I'm going to go through the platform, which is the social destination
very briefly, and then look at Gmail
Google search,
+1 button added to a website,
Google Maps and Google local, Google pages
Google Adwords
Google Now and Android,
Play
Hangouts, YouTube, Google Drive and Documents
Calendar and events, Google Wallet, Google offers Google Chrome, and even touching on Google 0:01:04.629,0:01:05.449 Chromebooks as well.
So I'm going to do that in a very short space of time and then you should see how
Google+ is Google.
Looking at Google+ as a social destination, we can see here I have my
stream of content.
I can also set up sub-streams by the circle, which I happen to have here,
Where I can put different people in receive
different content in each of those streams.
Now if I go to communities, I can also belong to communities and go and
talk with people in those communities about the subject matters. And there's tens of
thousands of communities already set up.
If I to go profile, and you might well be familiar with this, you can
send a post from your profile page to -
and it could be
email addresses, circles, or it could be public.
Now for this purpose, we're going to start to go beyond what you can do on Google+ as
the social destination
and we're going to start looking at the social layer. And to do that we're going to set up two
circles.
I've set up a 'friends circle'
and I've set up a 'business circle'. Because I wanted to show how I could choice
which circle to send different content to.
When I'm stepping outside the social destination into the rest of the social layer.
Looking now at Gmail
you can see that Shelley has sent me a message and like and I can hover over
and I can add her to
a circle directly from Gmail.
And also I can see that there's a video. And I can watch that video within Gmail
itself.
And I cannot leave a message and reply as if it's a Google+
post.
I can also filter my messages by moving between different circles. So that allows me
to prioritize.
Let's now look at how the social layer has gone into Google search as well.
When I search for Google as a social layer as a phrase in Google.com, it brings up
these results.
And as you can see there on the traditional kind of links that we're used
in search engines, but also we have these other ones
where there are these people's faces next to them, but also telling you how many
people have them in circles.
Now this is the concept of Google Authorship.
And Google Authorship relates both to the content you produce on Google+
in that
social destination environment
but also when you link to your web site
or when you're writing and you have authorship chip on another website. Taking this a
little further, in Google.com, if I click on show personal results,
I will also show results for people
who have been writing or sharing
upon a particular subject from within my network.
And I can see their faces
next to the content they have either written or shared. Now this is incredibly powerful because it really does increase the trust I have
and make me want to click those links potentially
more than certain other ones.
Now let's look the role of the +1 button on people's websites.
Now I use the +1 button on posts Themselves. And if I click it, not only
will the number go up, but also I have the opportunity, because I have a +1 and
Share button,
for people to share it. And it's a very familiar box that I can choose who to share
it to. I'm going to choose the friends circle. And that would just go
to that group of people.
Jumping very quickly to Google+ as the social destination, we can see that I've
shared the post and it's disappeared there.
Return to search, I want to have a look at the role of Google local
and also maps in the social layer.
So if I put in 'meditation Cardiff' and I scroll down to 'mindfulness in action',
I can see the location has a pin, which it tells me the pin on Google maps
and as I hover over, I can see and write a review. Now, when I click write a review,
if I happen to have been there,
I can then see the view box come up
that is in Google Local. And I can say what is the nature of that particular
business or event.
Taking this a little further and looking up at Google+ pages, if I search for London
Science Museum,
you can see here that the location comes up on Google map.
I can see that Zagat, which is Google, have the reviews there. But
also I can see a follow button.
If I hover over, I can follow
that particular page.
When I click to go to the page
I am able then to +1 as well which adds to their +1s,
and they can see the I've done this. So as I +1 a post,
they can see that I as an individual and all of these other
individuals have +1'd particular posts,
which makes it so much easier for fans of that particular page
to be found, and you can start to build a relationship.
Also as an individual who's interacting with that particular brand you can feel
really part of something if there's a community to which you belong, where you can post and
discuss your favorite subjects in that area.
Looking at Google Adwords next in relation to the social layer,
when people have the social extension switched on in relation to the
Ads, you'll see that the +1 button has an effect
because it starts to accumulate
the numbers underneath the actual ads.
And sometimes you may even see Little image icons as well.
And when you add this to the display ads, you'll see that it almost becomes a
social endorsement and
really increases the trust that people in your network
have been +1'ing that particular page.
Now let's look at Android.
Android as you probably know is the platform that most smart firms now use.
And it means that the social aspect
is fully integrated, of course.
And so much of this is going to be dependent upon who you have in your
network.
If you're using Google maps on your Android or your IOS device as the
app,
then when you search for a recommendation for a restaurant in an area
you don't know
than those recommendations will be linked to
reviews that have been done in Google local.
So the reviews from people within your network allow you to be the ones that
you will see
when you are searching for those recommendations.
Also relating to Android with Google Now, you going to find your receiving
more of the information at the right time.
Then we have Google Play which is integrated into Android and also I
can access through Chrome.
If I want to buy music, books, magazines, or apps, I can do it all
through play, and it will get sent across all of my devices.
Also if I wanted to buy music -- let's take Train, Soul Sister as
an example, and I continue -
not only can I purchase that for myself
but I can share that so other people can listen to it within
my social network. And I can choose which circles I want that to be shared with.
And you can see there, I want to share it with a collection of people.
Then we have Google Hangouts, which of course the social layer goes within as
Well.
So the video conferencing that we call Google Hangouts,
and you can have up to ten devices connected, which is often up to ten people in
a room, or fifteen if you have a corporate-type account,
and you can invite circles of people, individuals, to come and
spend time in that video conferencing setting.
Now if I wanted to also have it showing on my YouTube channel, I can click enable
hangouts on air.
And then when I start the hangouts, I will be able to stream it live and
also store it on YouTube.
We're now looking at my YouTube channel. And we can watch events live
on my YouTube channel, which I stream from the hangout, when it's a hangout
on there. Also I can decide who sees what content by adjusting the privacy
Settings.
So if one video for instance, I only wanted to show to a business circle, I
can simply change the settings to private and make it
just for that circle. Or if it was friends, I could change it to the
friends circle.
So I'm able to adjust who sees what content on my channel. Also,
not just the videos that I own
but I want to share a video, I can just click on share, and the same
principles of the social layer are going to
apply in that I can take that link and Share it with people or I
share it by clicking the button.
And guess what? I can then just decide either public or any of the circles or email addresses.
We also have the principles applied to Google Drive, which is the Cloud
storage on Google.
If only I have a look at a file and I right click, I go to share.
I can apply exactly the same principles of the social layer
to Google Drive as well.
So on this occasion, I click on Google+ and if I'd like this particular document to
go to friends
then I would type in my friends circle which I
know has the people I want to receive and have access to that content. This can be
phenomenal for collaborative working with Google docs
and you can even be getting together in hangouts and using the Google
Drive app
in hangouts,
you can be collaboratively working while seeing each other and talking at the same time.
As you see here, we have Google Calendar and if I click on an event events that
I have in my calendar
I can also share that event with other people as long as
I've had access to be able to do so.
So on this particular occasion, it's Elaine Lindsay's event.
And I click on share event And I can go through the process of deciding Who shall I invite to that event?
Moving on to Google Wallet, you can see the Purchases that I've made in Google Play and
how that's integrated.
And also, if it's available in your Country, you're able in Google to
pay merchants using your phone.
Google Wallet will also be integrating with Google offers, which I suspect are
going to get highly personalized based upon everything else we're doing within Google
Plus.
So we're reaching the end of this quick tour. There are more products and services that I could
show you that relate to the social layer and Google+,
but I want to point out that I've been using Chrome, which is
a Google browser all along and usually I use a Chrome book
which you log into Chrome
as soon as you start the ChromeBook, which is a Google product.
So there we go. That's the social layer and to explain why Google+ is
Google. Just to recap, we did a very quick tour of Google+ as a social destination.
And then we looked at Gmail, we looked at Google Search. We looked at Google maps and
Google local.
We looked at how Google pages and how you can link that to your websites. We
looked at Google Adwords. Then looking at Google Android and Googlemail. Looking at Play.
Looking at Google Hangouts. Looking at Youtube. Google Drive, Calendar and Events.
Google wallets,
Google offers,
Google Chrome, and just finished up with with the Chrome Book.
So that gives you a tour how Google+ is a social layer across all of Google's
products and services.
