Welcome to the Multimedia Impact Weather Briefing for Central Alabama. Today is Monday, February
10th, 2014. This briefing will continue to focus on the potential for winter weather
tonight through Wednesday night across portions of North Central Alabama. There’s much to
talk about so let’s begin. We will continue to discuss another round
of precipitation returning to Central Alabama this evening as an upper level disturbance
tracks eastward across the Ohio/Tennessee Valleys. This will bring another opportunity
for a wintry mix of precipitation across the northern portions of Central Alabama tonight
into Tuesday. Confidence is increasing in the chance for the wintry mix, with precipitation
transitioning as the system progresses overnight. A wintry mix has already begun across the
far northwest counties with light sleet and freezing rain returns, but little if any accumulations.
It will take a little longer closer to the I-20 corridor for rain to transition over,
mainly after midnight. Based on latest data, for locations generally near and north of
I-20, there could be an enhanced band of precipitation that sets up in conjunction with the 850 mb
trough. Some snow, sleet and freezing rain look possible for many areas in the north
in the area highlighted in white. Fluctuations to the north or south are still possible may
still occur depending on exact temperatures and where the band sets up. So, continue to
check the latest forecast and products frequently for any updates on what can be expected in
your particular location. As far as accumulations, here is the latest
estimate of what we can expect for a combination of sleet and snow. It is important to remember
that with varying types of accumulation less may be needed for impacts to occur. These
amounts are subject to change as we move closer in time.
This next slide shows what we are expecting as of now in ice accumulations from freezing
rain. Remember, these amounts depend greatly on exactly when and where the band of precipitation
sets up when temperatures fall below freezing. Unfortunately, our winter weather chances
don’t end on Tuesday during the day. Another round is possible with a 2nd shortwave that
will move across Alabama from Tuesday night through Wednesday night. We will continue
with the possibility of continued impacts with this prolonged event, with possible additional
accumulations across the north with lows in the lower 30s. For Tuesday night into Wednesday,
a wintry mix is possible across the northern 1/2 of Central Alabama.
As we move into Wednesday night it looks like we will transition to all snow with possible
significant accumulations across the northern portions of Central Alabama as a wedge of
cold air remains in place. Next here are the possible additional ice
accumulations for Tuesday night into Wednesday. Finally, here are the additional sleet and
snow accumulations for Tuesday night through Wednesday night.
