Hi, my name's Rose Clements
and I'm the Human Resources Director for Microsoft Australia.
Microsoft has spent a lot of time
being very deliberate about our culture
and our work environment.
If we can magnetise great talent
and keep that talent doing things that they love to do,
that's really, at the end of the day, what my job's about.
Microsoft Australia has just been named Best of the Best Employer
under the Aon Hewitt Awards.
Home is absolutely one of those places that people work from,
and it makes sense for them -
it fits in with their lives and their family and their community needs.
We believe that work is something that you do -
it's not just a place that you go to.
With that comes trust and empowerment and accountability for our employees.
The two tangible areas where we're saving money
would be our floor space, as an example.
Recruitment agency fees is another example.
But there are many more.
WOMAN: I'm Melissa Dewick.
I'm a Marketing Manager at Microsoft Australia.
For me, the ability to work flexibly
and have those days where I can work from home
is just fantastic,
because not only does it mean
I'm not in the car
for three hours that day,
but I also have found that
my productivity is much greater.
A typical week for me involves three days at the office
and two days from my home office.
I get huge lifestyle benefits from being able to work from home.
Just my work/life balance is in check,
which I think in today's world
is something that not a lot of people can say.
You are actually just as engaged in the work of the team,
and so I get a lot of people real-time communicating with me.
I can actually dial in right from my computer
and people can actually see me present in that meeting on the webcam,
and they can also, of course, hear me speak.
I have a home office that's a dedicated space,
and so I can shut the door on the day.
Being able to work flexibly with Microsoft
is a huge reason why I love the company.
To be able to do that is one of the reasons I love to work there.
You need a different style of manager
in an organisation that has trust and empowerment and accountability
as the cornerstones.
When it comes to workplace health and safety,
our approach is to educate and help our people understand
how to look after themselves.
