AGIP presents
A HISTORY FOR ENERGY
A documentary by GILLO PONTECORVO
The start of the '50s:
watched by the curious eyes of the country people of the Valle Padana
something new is happening.
Here come the large AGIP probes.
The company must measure up
to the significant geological complexity of Italy's substratum,
this requires interpretative analyses and cutting edge technical solutions.
AGIP is one of the first oil companies to
realise the big possibilities offered by exploring the seabed.
The following year and a new success:
in the Adriatic AGIP discovers the Ravenna Mare gas deposit,,
under the deepest part of the seabed, a good way off the coast.
In 1955 the first contract:
Mattei finalises an agreement with Egypt
in which the Egyptian state oil company C.O.P.E.,
is jointly associated in the research and the profits
with the Italian state company AGIP.
"I used to work near the Suez Canal:
every so often an AGIP oil tanker sailed past."
The size of completed work can be seen
by flying over the expanses of mangroves and forests scattered with rigs.
2 February 1976:
from an Atlantic port an oil rig starts its towed journey,
6500 km across the ocean.
It is one of the 4 oil rigs built by AGIP for the
Loango marine deposit in the Congo.
With an oil fleet with a cargo capacity of 3 million tonnes,
and over 40 million tonnes of of crude oil supplies
and with 40% share of the Italian oil market,
AGIP is one of the main international oil companies.
