Hi this is Gary with MacMost Now. On today's episode let's look at the new design of iOS
7.
So over the next few weeks we will be looking at all the new features of iOS 7. Before we
get into that, let's take a look at it as a whole and look at the new design. The most
radical change in the look of iOS since its start.
One of the big changes that you see right away is the look of the icons. It is a different
design for the icons. It is a flatter look to reflect the look of the insides of a lot
of these apps. Another thing is the background. You can't see it here when I'm projecting
this onto my Mac screen for recording but if you are holding your iPad and you move
it the icons float on top of the background. So it gives it kind of a little bit of a three
dimensional look to everything.
Now in addition to this background and a lot of other standard backgrounds there is a new
set under Wallpapers and Brightness. You've got dynamic wallpapers and these kind of look
like this. I will select one here and you can see there is these kind of dots and they
move around and flow. If I tilt the iPad you can see they flow quite a bit. So you have
the choice to choose these to make your screen look more interesting.
If we look inside some of the apps we are going to see instantly that things look a
little different. In the Calendar app you can see gone is kind of the realistic look
of trying to look like an actual calendar or looking like a legal pad in Notes for instance.
You can see it is just plain white right now so it is much simpler. A lot of redesigns
for things like the Clock you can see there. Even inside of things like say the Reminders
app and Contacts. Even the Settings app you can see has new icons on the left and it is
kind of a flat look with a white background. A lot of apps look like this now. Here is
the Music app for instance.
Now not all apps have been changed. For instance under iBooks it still looks like a wooden
bookcase. If I go into some other apps like some of the iWorks apps and such and GarageBand
they still look the same as before. No word whether they are going to change at some point
or whether those are just going to remain different, remain kind of looking like physical
world objects.
Probably the biggest change, I think, is inside of Game Center. Game Center before really
looked like a kind of poker game setup. Now it is white with the colored dots which seem
to be the theme in iOS 7.
But one change I do want to talk about now is how to search your iPad. Previously you
would swipe from left to right from the home screen there and see I can't go there. I can
go to the right but I can't get to the search screen there. Now it is actually something
that comes down from the top. From the middle of the screen I drag down and I get a search
there at the top and I can type something there and I can see apps and music and everything
like that. I can launch an app from there. So the functionality is similar. It is just
getting to it now is something that you bring up by swiping down in the middle of the screen.
Now there are a lot of changes that are both design and functionality. So we will be looking
at those in future episodes. For instance here is the Control Center that comes up from
the bottom. There is the Notification Center that comes down from the top. There is app
switching which if I double tap the Home button you can see there I can switch between them.
We will look closer at those individually in episodes coming up.
