Hello! I'd like to be silent for first two minutes.
I have prepared something from NASA's still photographs.
Altogether it was a folder of 8 gigabytes. They were recorded in a row from ISS
and I have made of these a short movie just for this event.
We are flying at the altitude of 350 kilometres. I am wondering: why this should be an exclusive
experience of about five hundred persons who saw this live?
Why this shouldn't be a thing somebody could wish
and make a wish come true? Up to now this wish has afforded to themselves
only six persons. And, by the way, it happened to be a lot cheaper
then Americans now pay for a seat in Soyuz! In the core of state driven Space programs
there is something irrational. Something what, in fact, isn't a progress.
The subject I wish to talk about is "Space reloaded"
or "Space 2.0", a process to which at the moment
in Croatia participate about 50 persons.
OK, let's go further! It was a small present prepared specially
for participants of TEDx Maksimir!
In Space 2.0 lot of things are upside-down. There are a lot of good reasons for that.
This little spot is ISS. We are talking about Space, and she is flowing
only 350 kilometres over Earth surface. The object behind [Moon] is
380.000 kilometres away! And and what we are doing is about the Moon.
I don't know if all of you could recall that feeling.
I remember, I was a kid.
Can you imagine that you look at full Moon knowing that at the same moment
somebody is walking up there?
Awesome!
The thing that happens right now in New (private) Space
is just distant hunch of the Moon and aim a such target.
The image shows the winner of Ansari X Prize competition.
SpaceShip One has raised to the border of outer Space at altitude of 100 kilometres.
This years will start experimental flights and next year will start touristic flights
up to the altitude of 110 kilometres.
The event will last, from entering the space ship
to leaving it - about an hour and half.
This is an immeasurable small step to dare to think about this goal!
However, we are pushing our efforts to reach this goal to the end of the next
year.
What went wrong (with state space programs)? They lacked the business plan.
The business plan was, in fact, the race in arming.
On other words, it was a World war but by other means.
The goal was to to score the flag. And after that happened - nothing.
Now seems Space Shuttle wasn't progress. In year 1972., when this concept was approved
it was an idea to fly to orbit once weekly.
Now we have only Buzz Lightyear, and Americans even do not have their own
vehicle to put humans at least to the orbit.
There is another analogy. Therefore, 42 years fate man walked on
the Moon surface Shuttle is put down. In year 1927. in Charles Lindbergh
wins one competition. A year later this gentleman (Sigmund Freud)
in glasses and beard, and his couch too, flies over the ocean to America,
to listen to stories told from his couch. And 42 years after Lindbergh
is happening this: (flying prototypes of B747 and Concorde).
We are not talking this (upper row of pics). We are talking this (lower row of pics).
We are competing in a competition similar to Lindbergh's and in a competition
which was won by Burt Rutan with SpaceShip One.
His goal was suborbital flight. Our goal is land a robot to a Moon.
And when we claim that Apollo shares the "discovery" of the Moon as Vikings
really "discovered" America, we are talking about many ships waiting for
start on our shores, like in the race started after
Colombo.
A few days ago died a man who rowed the Atlantic! We are talking this kind of progress which
has profound cultural influence!
The cultural impact of Apollo is that today there is less and less people believing
even it ever happened.
They are, of course, wrong, because they can't comprehend that politics and Space
programs developed based on quite different logic.
In the same logic believed Arthur C. Clarke when he put his plot of travel to Jupiter
in year 2001.
Because of that from year 2007 there is a prize in which Google has put 30 million
dollars. I am a leader of one worldwide team,
consisted of about 150 people from 18 countries, competing for this prize.
We are aiming to send a robot to Moon which has to "walk" there 500 meters
and send a video about that. I hope that you will too have a live
picture on your TV from Moon.
Team Synergy Moon is a weird mix of people slightly spoony with Moon,
who know more then enough, and - most important - we connect
to produce a new value.
In Croatia happened that I was sucked to Team in year 2009 and on 1st of December 2010
I was chosen for team leader.
In Croatia we are building two robots. Astronomic society Vidulini ie. their Astronautics
section iz building robot which will fly on lander,
which is designed in Australia, and descend to Moon.
And execute this task.
We really want to win this prize, because this
prize will tell everybody the thing I want to tell a few hundreds of you:
that things should be built from bottom, and not from the top.
For the times of peace by the peace-loving people,
and not an military program in disguise.
This is a picture of us, from Croatia, gathering on
technical conference. The similar will take place in few weeks
lasting ten days in Vidulini consisting of workshops for kids and
other programs not oriented only to ourselves.
When we gathered here for the fist time we have have enthusiastily realised
with everything the other guy knows!
We could use more sponsors… But these robots are the less expensive
pieces of hardware in the whole project. Every regional part of the team is
self-funding. Robot is the simplest thing to be built your own,
but some resistant things you must pay... We are now slowly reaching the last phase.
Meanwhile, after New Year's Day our program is changing. We do not act as a horizontal
network, but we are grouped by processes.
These dealing with rocket engines, rocketry, these dealing with communication, navigation
and data transfer, dealing with power management (energy)…
these guys who must know how much electricity will be needed for certain processing board,
instrument… whee is the source of it…
We are now working on final designs for the Moon.
Rovers are built in Croatia. They will be assembled with lander in Chile
which is designed in Australia. We will be launched by Californian
rocketry company Interorbital Systems from island of 'Eua in pacific Kingdom of
Tonga.
The real goal is not to pick the flag, but to make
the fist step, assure yourself that you are capable.
And one day we will capture an asteroid to mine naturally formed elements in Space,
and on Earth we find them only in traces.
Rare Earth elements, necessary to make things like this to work, on Earth ask a hell lot
of energy, a lot of impact to environment, to squeeze
a hell little of material for our electronics.
And 97 percent of these is from China.
Some day China could, hypothetically, forbid the export, our electronics will last to the
natural end of produced devices. So called lantanides…
Water-iced asteroids (comets are of that kin of constitution too) we could
capture and build on them station which should act as a real base.
Moon is a real, natural space station! The base for further exploitation of Space.
The first step for that are tourist space travels.
I was lucky, as a kid o Apollo - and now already grandfather -
to be chosen to fly, and not to pay for it! This is just more beautiful! It is hard but
it is nicer to monitor things from inside
then just to pay for tourist flight.
Tourist will fly from year 2014 to orbit and the flight will last 12 hours. Enough
for ten orbits and a scenery from beginning.
Albeit, what I want to tell is really Space 2.0,
it is something completely different, and something really tiny.
Satellite that you can build on your own. This is Interorbital Systems's rocket for
launching small satellites. These satellites start to be launched this
summer and autumn. Tvrtka već ima oko 200 narudžbi.
They are big like this, and they weigh like this.
They are consisted of elements which you receive in kit. And it is designed to
leave a space for your own experiment.
If you thought it is something terribly complicated, the fact is all of that, parts, launch to
polar orbit, communication for a month enduring mission
of your satellite - costs 8000 bucks.
This kind of project is affordable even for graduation students.
Not to speak of some user who said they cope "middle age crisis"
building a satellite. Better that then crashing a Porsche!
And a first satellite from Croatia is among them
on launch manifest. We are not making it a big spectacle, just
because the parts which should work on Moon
must be tested in vacuum, under galactic and solar radiation.
Also our concepts of communication must pass also tests.
And will be tested: from stratospheric probes to this small satellite.
And this is a small satellite, on the table. And if you wish, we can reveal a sect of
all components. Most of them is possible to buy in Radio Shack,
via Internet, or via Aladdin's.
I believe it is a beginning of a new age similar to the age when these two gentlemen
started didn't really have the idea what they are doing 30 years ago.
They even didn't have a slight idea about Internet.
Therefore, Space 2.0 starts with assembling a kit like this, executing of a very
simple tasks, and later we will see what happens!
I believe when thousand young persons graduate with their own satellites it will
be a much bigger leap for human kind, then we will, knowing everything already known
for 50 years - technology, physics, mathematics, electronics available from shops…
On Apollo spaceship only navigation computer had a weight of 60 kilos.
And you now in smart phone have an immeasurable more sophisticated device!
We are doing Space repeating trying to make it available the way now it is electronics.
Available to entrepreneurs the way computers have spread trough offices.
It's true, bosses have bought computers, and after that
they have bought a fat book to a secretary… Later, at last, people really started using
them.
We know that our moonscape, at the time we are going to land our lander,
will look just like that. Like on this image recorded by Japanese probe in year 2008.
They didn't landed. We will.
We exactly know how to do it.
Follow us. The broadcasts will we live.
And will be completely free.
Thank you very much.
