Hey everybody I'm Dan I'm here with Melissa and Aleyssi and we're here at Rutgers University
on the streets of College Ave to see what the students have to say about deaf awareness and the
National Association of the Deaf
So what do you know about deaf culture?
Umm not much.
Nothing really to be honest.
I don't really know much.
uh...
honestly not all that much. absolutely nothing
Umm
not too much i actually have a cousin that's deaf
uh... not too much about it
Uh honestly i don't think i really see any
kind of awareness about deaf culture around RU
so i don't really know much Ok do you think other Rutgers students know
much about
deaf awareness or deaf culture?
No, but it looks like something that we should know.
I think some might be, but I don't think to the point where anybody knows much
definitely not
because i had one kid in my class who
needed a hearing aid and had someone come in with a little computer and type it up for him
and that was like the first time I've ever seen a person with hearing problems on campus
No, I don't think so because we don't see a lot of people who are deaf
and I don't think RU really promotes it.
I think the only way I would know if someone was deaf would be if
I saw them signing or anything like that
I don't think theres really anything on campus to make us aware about deaf people
maybe other colleges, I feel like, would have more awareness about that
since they have
you know, workshops or sessions to discuss the matters of it
but at Rutgers, I don't believe so I know there's...
an international like there's a school for the blind deaf impaired but i don't
know too much about it. I always see flyers and stuff like that around campus about it
so I guess I'm informed, but it's kind of in passing
What do you think is the best way to spread
deaf awareness and deaf culture?
I think a fundraiser might be fun, especially on College Ave, there's so many people you
can bring them together
Umm
i'm not sure
I'm not very good at raising awareness of things but I think like flyers..
you know having things in front of Brower like people do all the time
you know spread the word
maybe hold workshops and sessions indicating like um, to increase the awareness
Um more just like flyers and just keeping people involved
like having like
um... special like having tables in front of Brower or just around campus
In terms of spreading deaf awareness at Rutgers i would say
it's important to realize the power of social media
so perhaps maybe if you guys to create you know a facebook page for Rutgers
to spread information or create events on the face book page that way to reach a
abroad audience in a short amount of time
well we had a lot of fun hearing the opinions of the students on College Ave (RU)
