My name is Christina Marquette and I am a Registered Dietitian with the Austin Regional
Clinic and I'm going to talk to you about different kinds of grains. There are many
many different types of grains for example amaranth, buckwheat, barley, rye, sorghum,
rice, keenwa, brown rice, millet. There are just a lot of different types of grains. A
couple of them botanically speaking aren't really grains for example amaranth and keenwa
but nutritionally speaking and the way that they are prepared they are very similar to
the other types like oatmeal and rice so for nutritional purposes they are actually thought
of as a grain. Some things to keep in mind amaranth and keenwa, and one of the ways that
they are different is that they are actually considered complete proteins so that is a
very good grain to include in your diet if you happen to be a vegetarian. For somebody
who is working on lowering their cholesterol both buckwheat and oats are very good at lowering
cholesterol as well as barley. Barley actually can lower cholesterol levels, LDL cholesterol
levels a little bit better than oats can. The benefit of buckwheat is that it has a
particular antioxidant called rutin that actually helps decrease damage called by LDL cholesterol
and helps prevent clotting so it is a very useful grain to include in your diet. Rice
is a grain that is typically very low in allergens so most of the time this is a very good grain
to try for example with children. Their first solid food often will be a rice cereal because
it typically doesn't cause allergic reactions. Other grains that are very healthy for you
would include corn. Corn actually has more antioxidants total than any other grain or
any other vegetable so a lot of times people are afraid to eat corn because corn is very
starchy but it actually has a lot of antioxidants so it is very healthy for you. As far as wheat
goes there is several different varieties of wheat, cammed is a type of wheat and spelt
is another. Cammed actually has more protein and more fiber than just traditional red berry
or white berry wheat grain so lots of different grains available, you don't have to feel like
you are getting bored from eating rice or oatmeal all the time, venture out, try something
different, try some millet or amaranth or keenwa or brown rice or even wild rice for
that matter so just a little bit of information for you about different grains.
