you get some money burning a hole in your pocket
what should I spend my money on? upgrade my camera body or lens
one question is
what will affect image quality?
I have a few different lenses
here and I upgraded from the
Canon Rebel which is the entry level DSLR for Canon
I got this back in 2008 and I
more recently upgraded to the much more capable 7d
which I'm using to record the video for this. Since we'rere comparing
image quality in this video you want to make sure to watch the video at the
highest resolution
technique affects image quality of course but it's hard to quantify so
for this for this comparison I set up
both cameras on tripods using the same settings
to take technique out of the equation
let's start with the Canon Rebel
with the kit lens. This is what I
used initially, it served me well for a while now let's swap out the kit lens
for the
50 F1.4
let's go back to the kit lens but this time
we use it on my 7d instead
and just for
her even more clarity here's
all three pictures side by side zoom in on part of the picture
Here is a picture taken with that the rebel and the 70 to 300
now let's swap the 70-300 with the 70-200 2.8L
The L indicates that it's
Canon's professional line of lenses so it better be high-quality
now let's go back to the 70-300 and put it on my 7d
see what happens
and for comparison
here's a closeup of part of the image
on all three pictures
it's usually the case that you get a better image quality boost
by upgrading your lens verses upgrading your body.
That being said there are many reasons
to upgrade your body. I upgraded
to the 7D because it can do video now and
it can take pictures
right in a row faster and has weather sealing
I'll talk more about the other reasons to upgrade your body in a different
video
ultimately it's a judgment call but
it's important to know that upgrading your camera body won't necessarily get
you
as much boost in quality as a better lens might
