Libya says all of its chemical weapons, including bombs and artillery shells filled with mustard
gas, have been completely destroyed. A foreign ministry official told Libyan state
media Tuesday that Libya is totally empty of any presence of chemical weapons ... which
could pose a threat to the safety of people, the environment, or neighboring regions.
The elimination of the weapons, which date from the era of former dictator Moammar Gadhafi,
is being hailed as a great success for Libya. The director of the Organization for the Prohibition
of Chemical Weapons, which helps countries destroy their arsenals, said the eradication
of the weapons had been a major undertaking in very challenging circumstances.
