Welcome to the CITE alpha tutorial series. The alpha tutorials exists as a
precursor to the official tutorials, and any feedback that you give us will help
us make the official tutorials that much better. In this particular video, we're
going to talk about using templates.
Templates allow you to pre-load all the styles you need to be CITE-compliant
into your document. This saves a bucket-load of time.
Templates also can automatically insert text into your document each time you create
a new one.
The first thing we need to do
is loaded template file.
Go to the homeschool debate tried whose link is in the description and scroll to
the bottom of the first post.
Click on the starter kit link.
Download the starter kit template file.
Go to your downloads folder and open the file
Now notice something interesting,
if you look at the document named, it shows up as "Document2".
This happens because Word will open a new document
based on your template
instead of opening the template file itself
so you will not and cannot
overwrite your original template file.
While this features purposeful,
we want it edit the template file itself not a document based on it.
So exit this document and go back to your downloads folder.
Now instead of double clicking on the template file, right click it
and select open from the context menu that appears.
This will open the template file itself.
Notice that the file name at the top of the window is "Starter Kit".
Now that we have the template open let's make a customization and save the
customized template
the templates folder.
scroll to the bottom of the first page and double click the footer.
Now we're going to replace the information in the footer with our own
information.
In this case, I'm using fake information.
Now that you've entered your information, go to the save dialog and click say "Save As".
In the save dialog, click on the "Templates" folder in the left pane.
Select "Word Template" from the "Save as type" from the drop-down menu.
Rename your file as
"Starter Kit - Personalized".
I already have "Starter Kit - Personalized" saved on my computer,
but you probably won't.
Hit save and go ahead and hit okay if you're a purposely replacing an existing
file.
Now you can close this template document.
Open up Word again (I shouldn't have closed word).
Now we're going to create a new document based on the templates, so let's go back
to the office button once again.
We'll hit new,
click my templates,
and select "Starter Kit - Personalized".
Hit "OK" and Word will open a new document based on this template.
If you scroll down to the footer, you'll see that word saved your changes.
Whenever you open this template, Word will write your team and club name in
the footer so you don't have to retype that information
every time you start a new brief.
Obviously if you're writing a brief or different research club you may want to
change this information and save it as a different template.
Or you can just re-type the information every time you open a new brief.
That decision it's up to you.
In future episodes we're going to talk more about how to customize templates
to look the way you want, but for now you have enough information to get yourself
started.
