IRD's Virtual Weigh Station helps enforcement agencies sort and identify commercial vehicles
with weight and credential violations or vehicles that are flagged in a database as requiring
inspection. IRD's VWS software is web-based, allowing access from anywhere the user has
internet, making it an ideal solution for mobile enforcement. The use of an IRD Virtual
Weigh Station system benefits the transportation agency, the trucking industry, and the general
public in many ways, including:
monitoring and enforcement of commercial traffic without the infrastructure costs for the construction,
maintenance and operation of a permanent static scale weigh station.
more efficient use of enforcement staff by focusing on those vehicles that are more likely
to be in violation of regulations.
protection of pavement and bridge structures against premature damage due to overweight
vehicles.
policing of trucks on secondary roads attempting to bypass main inspection stations.
Now, let's begin with a brief virtual weigh station demonstration. You can add display
criteria including vehicle number, lanes, classes, sort decisions, warnings, percentage
of maximum GVW, and a variety of enhanced criteria such as AVI, license plate jurisdiction,
and license plate number - if there are license plate readers on site - CVISN carrier I.D.
and CVISN vehicle I.D., and a number of other parameters.
You can set preferences between metric and imperial measurement, and whether audible
alarms are on and off. And you can create vehicle hotlists, such as carrier hotlist,
vehicle hotlist, and you can override those as an operator if the information has been
updated.
Let's start a live demonstration now, and you can see these vehicles as they're crossing
by the virtual weigh station. Let's just pause on a particular vehicle, and take a look in
greater detail. You can see that these two axles on this particular vehicle are overweight,
indicated by the red, these axles are okay, indicated by the green, and there's a report
sign which indicates that there's an overweight and a failed credential check. There's a vehicle
number, class, number of axles, length, the speed of that vehicle, GVW versus the maximum
allowed, and the maximum GVW percentage of the actual versus the maximum allowed, license
plate jurisdiction and license plate number, if there's a license plate reader on site,
and the USDOT number is there's a USDOT reader on site.
You can click on the thumbnail image and get enhanced information and images about that
vehicle. You can see a side view image, the license plate number, and the USDOT number,
and that's all compared against a database. Clicking on the vehicle record provides you
with more detailed information about the vehicle. Under WIM compliance, you can see axle separation
by axle, left and right wheel weights, the total axle weight against allowable axle weight.
The group weight against group allowable weights, and you can see, as previously indicated,
a tandem infraction, tandem axle violation with 34,416 pounds against 34,000 allowable,
and the carrier has HazMat credentials which is another reason for the red report sign.
Under vehicle snapshot you get further information, identification about the vehicle, inspection
information, and credential data. Under carrier snapshot, you get identification, the cargo
that particular carrier is authorized to carry, HazMat, inspections, safety, credentials,
and insurance. And you can print out a PDF, which provides you with another document for
enforcement or for further action. It provides you with the previous information we indicated,
the axle and credential information, the image of the truck crossing the virtual weigh station,
and the license plate, and USDOT number.
If we go back to the live stream we can pick up where we left off with vehicles crossing
the virtual weigh station. You can see that there are a number of vehicles which have
some violations. Also, you can see a vehicle here which is within weight regulations and
credential criteria, and it gets the green bypass signal... all of the axles are green.
And the IRD virtual weigh station also provides you with summary information. By lane it gives
you average speed, average lane occupancy, and vehicle counts.
As you can see, the IRD virtual weigh station is a powerful tool for pre-screening and commercial
vehicle enforcement. If you would like further information please contact IRD, International
Road Dynamics.
