So what I want to talk about today is when making vids for YouTube
And I want to use other people's text, music, photos and so on
How can I safely use other people's materials without worrying about copyright?
I want to give you some tips with that, so enjoy the vid!
Hey, Hikosaemon here
So today, just as I said before
I want to talk about a big concern I had
When I first started making vids on YouTube, which is
How can I use cool music and other material to make my vids more interesting
Without running into any copyright issues?
We all run into this problem, whether we make videos or just watch them
There might be a clip of a TV show we saw
Or some music that we want to put on a video clip
And the sound gets deleted off our video
Or the video we want to forward has been taken down
Seeya, Peace!
These kinds of issues are taking place all over YouTube
So how can we use third party materials without getting into these kinds of issues?
First up, and I think this is now a matter of common sense
Normally, with regards to commercial music and TV in particular
The creators usually won't let you just go and share that on some video that you made
They won't let you use that material
So without that, not knowing any music or video other than what we are fed through radio and TV
You might be left wondering if there is any other music or video out there left?
Some people believe that you simply aren't allowed to use music at all in your vids
However, as a matter of fact
There is a lot of music already out there, just as good or better than commercial TV/radio music
And artists that make fantastic video and images
There are great photographers who take pictures
And who are happy and willing to share their material and have others spread it for them
Up until now, to use such material, you had to directly obtain permission from the creator
But, when I went looking for where I could find material that I could use with permission
I came across something called "Creative Commons"
This shirt says "Creative Commoner"
But it is an NPO that I came across called "Creative Commons"
So what is this NPO?
Basically, where you have creative works digitized and on the internet, in video, sound, and text form
For creators who want to make such materials available to be shared
Without hiring lawyers or drawing up complicated contracts granting permission
You can just label your work with some simple symbols
That say "Go Ahead and Spread this on YouTube if you like"
For people who want to say "Please, share around and spread my music for me"
For photographers who want to say "please share my photos with lots of people who are intersted"
For video creators who care about having their video widely viewed
For people who want to say "share and pass on my work"
In a way that the widest possible audience can understand that and use it in an understood way
There is this NPO
Made up of various creators, artists,
Lawyers, and professors, all joined together
Even in Japan, there is the NPO "Creative Commons Japan"
An NPO that I myself volunteer to help at
Which is setting up a Creative Commons YouTube channel
With explanatory videos explaining what creative commons is and how it works
I'm making vids for this now and uploading them
For example, making subtitles for existing videos, with the help of other CC members
Just recently, I made an explanatory video with Hanafubuki, who did a wonderful voice-over explaning creative commons
I've made these kinds of videos for them
So today, there are two things I'd like to recommend to you all
First up, go and look up sites that make creative commons licensed material available
For example, for photos, there is Flickr
For text, there is Wikipedia, which everyone knows about who recently
Decided to attach CC licenses to all their articles
Then, for music, there is a great Japanese site called Wacca.fm
And there is also Jamendo.com, which is a global site with over 20,000 albums available
Most of the music I use for my themes and in my vids is from there
There are lots of sites like these
So go and check them out, and use the materials on them to make your YouTube vids cooler
The other thing I want to push is, in order to increase the pool of CC material and awareness of it
I'd like to call on other YouTubers making videos to upload
There is various info here in the sidebar
On how to attach CC licenses to your videos
I plan to do a simple explanatory vid on how to use CC with video
But I'd really like for everyone to proactively
say basically that "even if you copy my vid, I won't complain about it"
So long as you stick to the conditions I attach, you can copy and share my video
And I won't complain about it
That can be allowing any kind of use at all
I mean, you can allow any use at all if you want
Or you might want to stop people using your material commerically, making money off it without giving you anything back
You can prevent that kind fo use if you want
Also, you can even prohibit any kind of modification at all to your work
So there are lots of these kinds of restrictions you can attach
Basically, it's whatever conditions you are comfortable sharing your work under
Letting other people feel safe knowing exactly how they can use it
This is something that is missing from, and yet essential to use of the present day Internet
So I've put a link here to the Creativecommonsjp Channel
Go check out the vids I have up over there
Learn a bit about this and consider attaching these labels to your own videos, or internet blogs or digital art
If you're someone who wants to share your work with others, using these licenses
By sharing in this way, you can interact on the Internet without dealing with accusations
Without anyone calling you a criminal or making an issue about copyright with you
So you can relax and enjoy making intersting fun videos
So that's the message I want to put out in this vid today
I'm going to talk about this in a bit more detail in future
And I want to introduce to you some cool Creative Commons material sites
And teach you more about this NPO I am in
It's a really cool concept that I hope catches on and spreads in Japan
So learn a bit, and try it yourself
That's it from me today
