We are witnessing one of the largest oil spills in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Region.
This land was a settlement of Nenets for centuries. They bred reindeers, fished and hunted here.
A lot has changed since oil companies arrived. Oil flooded the tundra which has been divided by roads and transformed into a landscape of oil derricks.
Grasslands are diminishing. Rivers are poisoned. Various fish are on the brink of extinction.
Oil companies do not take into account the interests of indigenous people or our interests.
For the sake of short-term profit provided by oil. We lose unique natural areas and northern indigenous cultures.
There is an oil derrick there where I was born.
Every time I pass this place my heart aches.
I have no birthplace now. It is occupied with the oil derrick.
Don't cheat people. Doing this, you are fooling yourself. We all live on planet Earth.
This planet is small and it is our common home. Someone thinks he make a profit out of it.
But there will be no need for this money when everything we have is destroyed and nothing is left for next generation.
We have about 800 reindeers five years ago.
Now just 80-100 are left.
They are mainly shot down by oil industry workers. There is no way fight them.
If I should shoot these hunters I would be sent to prison.
But when they shoot my reindeers there is no punishment for them.
I think that there is no future.
If the oil companies leave us we can manage to save something here to recover this place. But while oil workers are still here there is no future for us.
People are dying.
If oil companies behaved correctly, they would ask us where drilling is possible and where not. Which river is spawning, where fish come for winter cabin.
Fish come to this bog in the autumn and now all rivers are blocked here the fish has nowhere to go.
the fish has nowhere to go.
I would have demanded from oil companies careful treatment of nature in civilized human way. They should work carefully, preventing oil spills.
It's perfectly plan that they shouldn't be allowed to drill on the sea offshore area.
An oil spill in the sea can run everything.
Everything is interconnected. If catastrophe happens here it will come out somewhere in America or in Africa.
The place where I used to run as barefooted girl is called Nyanyah-Yaha. This is river abounding with fish.
The river is very narrow, not wider than this class. The fishery was so strong that a fence was set up.
Near this fence the water was boiling from swarming fish.
In 2005 an oil derrick was built there.
I can not speak calmly. When I arrived at this place in the summer of 2006 there was a dead river there.
Today the company Gazprom is one of the leaders on pipeline raptures in our country.
As a result of the analisis of satellite images and several expeditions, Greenpeace has identified over 200 oil spill on just a few fields of the company, among lots of them.
Despite its special state importance Gazprom overshadows the social and environmental responsibility in the regions of oil production
and instead of cleaning spills and repair pipelines, Gazprom spends money for development of new oil fields, including development of the Arctic shelf.
Oil spill in the conditions of the Arctic seas is almost impossible to localize and efficiently remove existing technologies are ineffective.
. Thus, starting oil production in the Arctic, Gazprom threatens the environment of the whole region,
because nature has no borders.
The company forces for their own interests, ignoring the numerous objections conservation community and aggressively responding to the attempts of any protest.
The international community must unite to stop the Gazprom - this dangerous Arctic aggressor, until it is too late.
