Hey! and welcome to the Cannabinews, this is Sam Humeid
I have senior science correspondent Gabe Green with us. Lisa Kaler and Sarah Diesel are out on assignment.
And they'll have some interesting news for you next week. So I was just talking to Gabe before
about cannabis and potential uses of cannabis
for treating diseases like cancer
epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and so on and so forth
um, you were blowing me away with some of the things
we were talking about. I know in my store, we've been working on, you and I have been working together
to replicate this Rick Simpson Oil
Because I know every day people are calling my store "do you have the Simpson oil?"
Do you have the Phoenix Tears? Do you have... Do you have what's gonna cure me of my disease?
and I have to tell these people despite their horrible sob
stories, that I can't make it for you, because I don't know the actual
recipe for it. And Im not going to tell you I can save your life
based on something you saw on youtube.
Right. Exactly. And that's just another example of
a pop culture phenomenon going viral if you will. and uh...
You know, I saw the documentary. Rick Simpson is this
Canadian guy that developed a special
oil- out of hemp and he claims it's a cure-all
you know it cures everything you know from
cancer to arthritis... you know
It's just an absolute cure and
you know that when we talk about cancer
it's very very hard to use the word "cure".
that's the other C word that's really
difficult to say because you know
we just found out
recently... Some researchers took a look at
you know certain types of brain tumors:
glioblastoma multiforme which is called "glioma"
that's what killed
Ted Kennedy. It's actually
unfortunately one of the most common brain tumors
in older people and what they've recently found was that
the reason it just keeps coming back ...it recurs
with a vengeance even after surgery
and the reason for that is, just like there are stem cells for everything else,
there are cancer stem cells and we know that there are
glioma stem cells and
their job is just to keep recreating
and perpetuating that tumor and so
you think you can have clean margines
you know, like a clean surgical cut and really there's micro
metastacies going on in there, you know
and they're these cancer stem cells that
hide out. Anyway,
we got somebody like Rick Simpson claiming he can cure these things
and it really is a kind of false hope for some people.
Now, that said...
Well, why is it a false hope? What do I tell my patients when they call me on the phone going
can you get me the Simpson Oil. Ok because there really needs to be a lot more
independent research a lot of corroboration
of these claims and from what I've seen the way he prepares this oil
it might have some toxicity to it
itself. I mean, the guy is using
something called
Naptha. Paint thinner essentially yeah...petroleum distillates which contain
benzene .... talulene... what are those?
Carcinogens folks. They cause cancer. So he's
extracting the hemp using carcinogens.
But they expect pure olive oil or some olive juice extract through hexane
well hexane is not as bad as as these these other things
Hexane evaporates pretty easily
it's...you know...
if you breathe in hexane, pure hexane is not good but
you know the example you gave with the olive oil
the hexane is evaporated
if you could show me that Rick Simpson has been able to
completely cleanse his product
of all these solvents ... well the option is 99% isopropyl alcohol.
thats great
if you use that, you know
it's far healthier ....
The evaporative rate of the alcohol is that safer than... does that
that take away some of the false hope?
well the point is that
I think it is a safer preparation good
but we haven't, there haven't been enough tests
of that - of Rick Simpson's preparations to say that that
cures cancer. What we have found really
recently and i think it is very exciting
What we have found is that
studies of
CBD pure CBD. Right, the next wave
of plant life in the marijuana industry.
so synthetic cannabidiol
or extracted cannabidiol
you know from the plant
has been shown to have a very very
beneficial effect on breast cancer in this case
And it's really weird the way it seems to work
we don't really know the mechanism but it says inducing
apoptosis. Do you know what that is? No explain it for me.
alot of people pronounce it A Pop tosis. Which isn't correct.
apoptosis.
and what that is is programmed cell death
okay so
the way you get cancer cells to die, is you send a signal
to program them to kill themselves and the way they do that
the way you do that is actually through oxidative stress. that's one of the ways
it's actually through free radicals which we've been tar
well a bad thing, reactive oxygen species
peroxides, hydrogenperoxides you know
these potent oxygen radicals
but guess what they do
they kill cells and they kill faster dividing cells
and thats the whole premise of cancer treatment so
so if you're blowing these things away with
these radical peroxides um you're
you're damaging cancer dna. ...uh so this is a case where
reactive oxygen species
are are a good thing. You were showing something
a study from 1986-87...
all Im saying about that was back in 1987 we were comparing the different
cannabinoids. You never know it's um use of course
hey yeah they were comparing these different structures
and they were saying well the
CBD cannabidiol doesnt have this
this ring that THC does. Its kinda sliced open
the ring...and this is for that reason it's completely inactive
look how far we've come, now we know that CBD is one of the most
active cannabinoids in fitting into CB2 receptors
so really we've come a long way... We absolutely have! Gabe thank you so much
there is so much to get in to. we just don't have enough time for this in this short segment.
