On the syllabus, I do have the
goal is to build an app and have it in the App Store by the end of the semester.
It reality, I wasn't sure.
I had no idea. I was hoping at least we'd have a good PowerPoint to show off at the end
of designs they went through and the coding they had at this point.
Here we are with five student teams who I believe are all gonna have apps submitted to the Apple App
Store within the next week.
My name is Jeana Bertoldi and I'm on Team Dragonfire. We created PicBook. I didn't know what to expect
at the beginning of the semester. I just was really excited about the idea of it.
I'm not that knowledgeable about technology but I definitely am
interested in learning more.
Especially, because that is where our world is going.
Journalism is really moving into the digital realm
and it's really important for journalists
to learn more about technology.
My name is Azamat Kalmurzayev.
I am a senior studying computer science.
I am a member of Team Jaymaster. Our app is called Glos Guide
for journalists. I was really excited about this class because the teacher
of this class is not a computer science professor. He's a journalism professor so I
thought that's the kind of class I'm looking for.
It's probably going to be self-paced class. A lot of self-teaching.
I actually came twice
and I was able to get in the second day.
I really want to say thanks to our professor,
Professor Robert Quigley. Working really *** these apps all the time
and I didn't ask for that but they realize that they needed to do to have a really good project.
I think the exciting thing about being in journalism right now
even on a professional-level we're experimenting. So colleges and universities
have to be experimenting, we have to be sending out students who are creative thinkers
who think beyond the traditional norms of what defines a journalist or
coder. Have people who think differently and are able to
operate within completely changing environments at all times.
What makes my job easier
is a university like UT Austin providing curriculum like this
so students don't have to make that hard transition
from academic
to professional life.
What makes it easier is that they already have hands-on experience
and I can pitch that, I can market that to Zynga, Facebook,
Las Vegas Sands and existing clients
whoever they may be.
The most important thing about this class is that
it taught everyone in the class that,
you have to aim for perfection not for a good grade.
I'm so incredibly proud of these students.
I justed stayed out of the way. I was coaching. I was trying to give
inspirational talks. I'm not a coder myself so I had to
just say, "Do it! You can do it!" and they did it.
I can't believe it. It's really amazing.
