In this video we’ll show you how to connect your Windows 8 device to your wireless home network.
First make sure you know the wireless network name, also known as the SSID, and the network security key – this is the password required to connect to your wireless network.
If you don’t know this information, you should contact your internet service provider and obtain this information before continuing with this video.
Your network may also require a username.
You’ll need to have this information if your network requires it.
With your computer on and at the Windows Start screen, type “wireless”.
Select SETTINGS on the right and select CONNECT TO A NETWORK from the available search returns.
The available wireless networks are displayed on the right.
Select the network to which you wish to connect.
If this is a network you’ll be using often, leave the checkmark in the “Connect automatically” box.
Select Connect.
When prompted, enter the network security key, and if requested, the username as well.
Select OK, and the laptop will connect to the wireless network.
You’ll then be prompted either to allow or not allow sharing between this laptop and other devices on this network and to allow this laptop to connect to other devices on the network such as printers.
Read the available options before choosing one.
For this video, we will be choosing “Yes, turn on sharing and connect to devices” for a home or work network.
This allows you to share information such as pictures, files and music with other authorized computers on the same network.
After choosing, your laptop will connect to your wireless network.
If you’d like to setup the home network sharing options after connecting to your network, type “SHARING” at the Start Screen.
Then select SETTINGS on the Right and locate and select CHOOSE HOMEGROUP AND SHARING OPTIONS from the available search returns.
Home group options allow you to decide how to share information from this device as well as enable the ability to allow media devices such as TVs and game consoles to play content from the Windows 8 device wirelessly through the network.
Select “Create” to view home group settings.
A MEMBERSHIP password is also displayed that you can use on other computers on the network to connect with this device.
