Today on Drinks with Diablo
How to Make an Old Fashioned
Hello, welcome once again
to TheFNDC.com
This is your bartending host, Jöhnny Dîablø
here with Caleb Hammersley, my guest today.
And today we're making an Old Fashioned.
Now as you probably guessed from the name of the drink,
this cocktail goes back a long way,
to about the 1800s.
And recently, it's been making a big comeback in bars.
So what you're going to need: some bourbon,
and if you can't get a hold of bourbon, use rye whiskey.
And if you can't get that, [ rye whiskey ]
use Canadian whiskey.
We're using Makers Mark today; I hope that's good.
We need some bitters,
you need either a 2 to 1 simple syrup, or some sugar cubes,
Club soda, an orange, and some maraschino cherries
Now,
what we do: we put a ¼ oz of simple syrup in there
or one sugar cube.
Throw a couple cherries in there.
If you've got a sugar cube, then you
douse it with a couple dashes of bitters.
That's a couple more than a couple, that's OK.
Anyway, a couple dashes to dissolve the sugar cube.
Then you cut an orange wedge.
Just cut like one wedge.
And we'll cut a little bit of rind.
We're going to muddle this together,
and we're going to get all the oils out of the orange
>> Amy Inferno: Come on, let Caleb muddle.
>> Dîablø: Do you want to muddle? Go ahead.
>> Caleb: Sure. >>Inferno: [ laughs ] Yeah, let Caleb muddle.
>> Dîablø: Okay, muddle that up.
>> Caleb: Why do they call this muddling?
>> Dîablø: I have no idea.
>> Cortney: [ laughs ]
>> Caleb: It works for me.
>> Amy Inferno: What is it supposed to be doing?
>> Dîablø: Basically, you're just pressing out
the essence of whatever you're mixing up there.
Just mixing up -
>> Amy Inferno: So the oils?
>> Dîablø: Yeah, the oils in the orange rind.
The same principle like when you -
>> Amy Inferno: Okay, I think he's putting a little too much muscle into that muddling.
[ laughing ]
>> Dîablø: Does it look muddled?
>> Amy Inferno: It looks muddled. [ laughs ]
>> Caleb: Alright, that looks muddled to me.
>> Dîablø: Looks good and muddled, okay.
Then, we throw down some of our ice.
There we go.
>> Caleb: Alright.
>> Dîablø: Then -
>> Caleb: How many ounces do we do?
>> Dîablø: Two ounces of bourbon.
>> Caleb: Alright.
>> Dîablø: OK, two ounces of bourbon. Throw down.
And then,
top it off with a little bit of club soda.
Alright.
And we - oh,wait. Stir it up a little.
Just mix that together.
>> Amy Inferno: [laughs ]
>> Dîablø: Lost my bar spoon. That's OK.
Just mix it up.
Nice and good there.
Boom boom boom boom.
Okay,
then
Garnish
We've got cherry -
>> Caleb: Oh ! Alright.
>> Dîablø: And then we'll put another little orange wedge on there.
>> Caleb: We make it kind of fancy for the holidays.
'Cause it's the New Year and all.
>> Dîablø: Fancy, yes.
Absolutely.
Okay so, boom.
There you go.
Alright, give me your opinion.
What's the verdict?
>> Caleb: Good. Cheers.
>> Caleb: Happy New Years'. >> Dîablø: Alright, there you go.
