Ed Shimon at the National Weather Service with a multimedia weather
briefing
concerning the bitterly cold weather the next couple days
we
have a wind chill warning that continues in effect through Tuesday at noon
for wind chills of 25 below
or colder roughly in the northeast half of the area
and a wind chill advisory for wind chills of fifteen below to 25 below in the
southwest portion of the area
frostbite can occur in
10 to 15 minutes under these conditions. There also was potential for
hypothermia
if you remain outdoors for extended periods of time
wind chill readings that are expected across the area over the next three
mornings are outlined in this
graph. Peoria being around 25 below this morning
Bloomington 27 below champaign around 25 below as well.
further south Mattoon nearly twenty below in Lawrenceville down
around 15 below this morning
the coldest wind chills are expected to by Tuesday morning around 6am
as the air temperatures across the area drop to around 15 below zero
and wind chills 25 to 35 below zero across the north
with air temperatures in the south
towards Lawrenceville around minus five degrees and wind chills -15
Arctic high-pressure advancing
from Canada is causing these
bitterly cold conditions you can see on the image here some
scattered flurries behind the arctic cold front
will continue across Illinois this morning
and possibly into the afternoon. but the main story
is the dangerously cold conditions
You should definitely limit your time outdoors and cover all exposed skin
if you have to be outside. If you must travel
make sure you have a winter survival kit and some blankets in your vehicle
also watch out for any outdoor pets
