Ok hi everyone, this is just as really quick unboxing of the new Leap Motion controller.
This is actually the dev kit, that they just started shipping out, and the retail version
will be available I believe in about a month, and I think I read exclusively at Best Buy
for around $69.99. So let's take a look. Now I've actually already opened this and played
around with it a little bit but I put it back together so you could get an idea of what
it looks like. So it comes in this really cool black box that's very, let's call it
utilitarian, but it's just a normal cardboard black box with the words Leap Motion dev board
version 5 taped on to it. It was very cool of the Leap group to send this out to me,
and to all the other developers. Take a look when you open it up; even though the package
is sort of utilitarian, they do give you this printed sheet, which is actually pretty cool,
and it's just a letter from the company. So that's very cool to see, nice touch. (one
second while I package it back up). And you have the styrofoam packing kit. And inside,
there's not much; you've got this USB cable, which actually is pretty sweet. It's sort
of a flat-style (I'll hold it up there so you can hopefully see it), so it's really
thin; my only complaint is that it's pretty short for something that's supposed to attach
on to the top of your monitor. I actually couldn't get it positioned how my desk was,
so I wasn't able to try it out very well. But that's a minor complaint, I'll just get
a USB extender for it, no problem. And then, the important part, the Leap Motion controller.
As you can see, it's VERY thin, it's, there's not much to it; I know there's been already
a couple of people that opened theirs' up already and it just has two little camera
sensor things in there, and uh...let's see if I can get something for some perspective
here, so here's a Game Boy, old-school Game Boy, here's the Leap Motion controller, so
it's just a little bit bigger than the, about half the screen of an original Game Boy. So
very cool! And like I said, I already opened it up and tried it a little bit, and I was
having some trouble getting it working, but I think it's because it's meant to be on the
top of your monitor, and I had it kind of sitting on a stand, so...we'll keep playing
with it. There's no software that comes with it, as you can see; the software actually
has to be downloaded from the developer section of the website, so with the SDK you get the
installer, and from there, it'll put a little application in your tray so that you can at
least start playing with it; you get a little visualizer so you can move your hands around
in front of it and sort of see the input. So that's it, that's the Leap Motion controller,
at least the dev kit for it, and very cool of the Leap team to send that out, and I'm
excited to get started playing with it. So make sure to check them out, Leap Motion!
See ya!
